The Joey Porter Jr. situation has started to draw attention well beyond Pittsburgh, but a trade still feels like a long shot.
The Steelers cornerback remains without a long-term extension, and that delay has prompted multiple teams around the league to check in on whether he could become available, according to NFL insider Jordan Schultz. Porter Jr. is in the final year of his rookie deal, and he has now watched three other members of his draft class sign extensions with the Steelers this offseason while he has stayed out of training camp and the preseason picture.
Porter Jr. has not taken part in practice during camp and is not expected to play in the preseason. Head coach Mike McCarthy said Porter Jr. tweaked something in his back and was placed on the Physically Unable to Perform List after the team’s mobility test. McCarthy has not had any further update since then.
Porter Jr. did participate in some install work during OTAs and minicamp, but he was widely viewed as a hold-in. Some around the situation have speculated that the PUP designation was used to avoid the optics of that hold-in continuing into training camp.
Even with outside interest building, the Steelers do not appear eager to move him. The team has not landed a deal yet, and there were stretches this summer when communication was thin, but there are still steps left before Pittsburgh would seriously consider a trade.
The biggest reason is simple: the Steelers want Porter Jr. on the roster this season. With Aaron Rodgers back and a new coaching staff in place, Pittsburgh is preparing for a playoff push, and its top cornerback is part of that plan.
There is also another layer to this: if the sides still cannot get something done, Pittsburgh could use the franchise tag next offseason and try again.
For now, the expectation still leans toward a deal. Porter Jr.’s asking price is believed to be above what the Steelers originally had in mind, but neither side seems interested in rolling into the season without an agreement.
Christian Gonzalez and Porter Jr. are the last two big-name cornerbacks still seeking new deals this summer, and Gonzalez is expected to move first. Once he sets the market with a record contract, Porter Jr. will likely be next in line as he looks to land the best possible number from Pittsburgh.
So yes, teams are watching. But a Porter Jr. trade this offseason still doesn’t look likely. Not right now, anyway.

Steelers Suddenly Have A Clear Path Through Their QB Logjam
The Steelers quarterback room has been crowded enough to draw attention all summer, with Mason Rudolph, Aaron Rodgers, Will Howard and Drew Allar all on the roster. Rudolph in particular has become a familiar name in the conversation because of his experience, his standing as a veteran backup type and the simple reality that there are only so many reps to go around in camp and preseason.
Mike McCarthy has already spoken highly of Rudolphs command and experience, which only adds to the sense that Pittsburgh has a decision to make as the roster takes shape. His absence from a recent preseason game also turned heads, especially with the team weighing a possible path forward that could ease the logjam and reshape the depth chart behind Rodgers. Steelers Suddenly Have A Trade Chip The Chargers Might Need
Tyler Biadaszs injury during Tuesdays joint practice has quickly changed the Chargers outlook up front, and it could push them into the market for help at center. With Biadasz now sidelined and rookie Jake Slaughter next in line, Los Angeles is staring at a thinner cushion than it expected, especially after losing a player who was supposed to stabilize the middle of the line.
That is where Pittsburgh could suddenly have something useful to offer in Brock Hoffman. The Steelers backup lineman gives teams the kind of flexibility that matters in a pinch, with experience at both center and guard, and that sort of versatility tends to draw attention when injuries hit this early. If the Chargers decide they need insurance before the situation gets any trickier, this is the kind of phone call that can turn a roster setback into a trade conversation. [Read more 🡒]
Aaron Rodgers Just Raised The Stakes On Pittsburgh's Next QB Decision
Aaron Rodgers gives the Steelers a clear short-term answer at quarterback, but he also sharpens the question hanging over the franchise once this season is over. With Mike McCarthy in place as the new coach, Pittsburgh is planning to use the year to take a close look at Will Howard and Drew Allar, two younger options who could shape the post-Rodgers future if the organization decides to move on.
ESPNs Dan Graziano reported that Rodgers own season could speed up or slow down that timetable. If he plays well, Pittsburgh is expected to ride with him through the year and then sort out the next step afterward, but if his play slips, the Steelers may be pushed to lean on Howard or Allar sooner than expected. Either way, Rodgers has already raised the stakes for how the next quarterback decision gets made. [Read more 🡒]
