The Pittsburgh Steelers’ second preseason game of the 2026 campaign against the New York Jets is shaping up as one of those nights where the depth chart matters almost as much as the scoreboard.
Mike McCarthy has already revealed the one thing fans were waiting for: Will Howard will start at quarterback. Beyond that, the Steelers are keeping plenty close to the vest as they work through a lineup that will be short on regulars.
Howard and Drew Allar are set to split the game, though the exact plan isn’t clear. It’s not known whether Howard will handle the first half and Allar the second, or whether the two will rotate by quarters.
At running back, Lew Nichols appears to be in line for the first snap. With Kaleb Johnson on the brink of being cut, Nichols stands as the Steelers’ top option behind Rico Dowdle and Jaylen Warren. Travis Homer should also see a heavy dose of first-team work, but Nichols looks like the back with the best chance to make a statement.
Riley Nowakowski is expected to handle nearly the entire game at tight end, just as he did against the Green Bay Packers. And with Pat Freiermuth out, Darnell Washington should open as TE1, though only for a series before Robert Tonyan, Lake McRee and Jaheim Bell take over across the first and second halves.
Kaden Wetjen is another name to watch on offense. McCarthy said after the first preseason game that Wetjen needs to improve as a wide receiver, and this matchup gives him the chance to do it. Ben Skowronek should also log a solid number of snaps, but Wetjen could still be the one who runs out with the first-team offense.
Up front, Zach Frazier is not expected to play for long, though the rest of the starters should get a few series. After a rough outing against the Packers, the group needs work before Week 1.
The battles at right guard and right tackle continue to be part of the story, which means Cook and Anderson will see extra reps. Brock Hoffman and Broderick Jones are also set to get their turns.
Defensively, Derrick Harmon and Keeanu Benton should start but not stay out there for very long. The Steelers want live reps for their young players, and after those two come off the field, Dean Lowry and Gabe Rubio will be two names to track as they fight for spots on the 53-man roster.
T.J. Watt and Alex Highsmith are out again, and probably for the whole preseason.
That leaves the pass-rush work to Herbig and Sawyer, with Jamin Davis and Julius Welschof rotating in behind them. Herbig is expected to finish his night before Sawyer does.
Inside linebacker is another area where the Steelers plan to experiment. They’ll start only two players there, but the team is expected to test a three-man rotation with Patrick Queen, Payton Wilson and Elandon Roberts. Roberts is new to the 2026 roster and needs the reps, and the expectation is that he will outplay both of the others.
The secondary is also missing some major names. Joey Porter Jr., Jalen Ramsey and Daylen Everette are all out, and Jamel Dean is not expected to play either as the team gives its veteran a rest. That opens the door for Asante Samuel Jr. and D’Shawn Jamison on the outside, with Doneiko Slaughter working inside.
With Brandin Echols dealing with an ankle injury and no timeline for Ramsey’s return, Slaughter has a real opportunity to impress the coaches and maybe carve out a roster spot.
At safety, the Steelers won’t use their starters, giving Robert Spears-Jennings and Rayshawn Jenkins another chance to compete. The third safety spot is still wide open, and it remains unclear whether one of them will claim it or whether both will stick around.

Steelers Have A Joey Porter Jr. Decision Fans Can't Ignore
Joey Porter Jr. is still waiting on a long-term deal from Pittsburgh, and the wait has only added another layer to a situation the Steelers would probably prefer to have settled by now. The young cornerback is also on the Physically Unable to Perform List because of a back issue, which makes his standing one of the more closely watched items around the team as it moves through the offseason.
Interest from other NFL teams has already surfaced with Porter as a potential trade target, but a deal does not appear to be in the Steelers plans right now. If the two sides still do not have an agreement next offseason, Pittsburgh may have to consider using the franchise tag, keeping the conversation around Porter very much alive for another year. DK Metcalf Has Steelers Fans Doing A Double Take Again
DK Metcalfs first year in Pittsburgh gave the Steelers plenty to think about after they sent a 2025 second-round pick to Seattle to bring him in. He still finished as the team leader in receptions, yards and touchdowns, even with a two-game NFL suspension for conduct detrimental to the league after an incident involving a fan cutting into the back end of his season. When he came back for the Wild Card Round, he was part of the offense again, but the Steelers are clearly looking for more from him than just the outside threat he has long been known for.
Thats where the next wrinkle comes in. Pittsburghs coaching staff wants to move Metcalf around more and use him in the slot more often in the upcoming season, a shift that could change how defenses match up with him and how the passing game is built around him. For a player who already gave the offense its most productive season in those categories, the question now is whether the Steelers can turn that into something even bigger by giving him a different kind of role. DK Metcalfs New Steelers Look Has Fans Wondering Whats Next
DK Metcalfs first season in Pittsburgh has already taken a few turns, from the blockbuster trade that brought him over from Seattle in exchange for a 2025 second-round pick to the two-game suspension that ended his regular season early after an incident involving a fan. He did make it back for the Steelers playoff game, but the production was limited, leaving plenty of room for the conversation to shift from arrival hype to how the fit actually works moving forward.
Now the attention is on the next chapter under new head coach Mike McCarthy, who plans to use Metcalf more in the slot in 2026. It is a notable wrinkle for a receiver whose look and role already changed once when he landed in Pittsburgh, and it has fans wondering whether this will unlock something different or simply give the Steelers another way to get one of their biggest names involved.
