The Steelers are getting a timely lift in the backfield before their Week 6 matchup with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. According to ESPN’s Jeremy Fowler, running back Rico Dowdle is expected to play Sunday after being sidelined since Week 2 with a toe injury.
Dowdle’s injury came in the Patriots game, where he dislocated his toe twice. He missed the next game against the Indianapolis Colts, but after getting back on the practice field last week and going through another full week of work, he now looks ready to rejoin the offense.
"Steelers RB Rico Dowdle (questionable, toe) is expected to play Sunday vs. Bucs, per source. Dowdle has been out since Week 2."
Pittsburgh has been dealing with plenty of offensive injuries around him. The team is without wide receivers Michael Pittman Jr. (foot) and Roman Wilson (finger), both of whom are on Injured Reserve. Ben Skowronek (calf) is out too, and tight end Pat Freiermuth (calf) also appeared on the injury report during the final practice day, just a day before kickoff.
Even with Dowdle on the way back, Jaylen Warren remains the centerpiece of the ground game. Since Dowdle went down, Warren has posted more than 100 total yards in all three games. He topped 100 rushing yards twice in that stretch, and in Week 5 against the Colts he piled up 101 rushing yards, 87 receiving yards and two touchdowns.
Head coach Mike McCarthy made it clear that Warren’s role is not changing.
"Jaylen’s our featured player right now. Let’s make sure we all recognize that.
He’s hot. He’s playing great football for us,” McCarthy said.
"So it’s important for us as an offense, you know, coaches and players alike, to continue to put him in position to make plays. So, that won’t change."
That means Dowdle should have a chance to contribute right away, but Warren’s workload doesn’t figure to shrink much. With the Steelers thin at receiver and tight end, the offense may lean even more heavily on its running backs in the weeks ahead, making Dowdle’s return especially valuable.
After a rough stretch of injury news on offense, Pittsburgh finally gets something positive going into Sunday: help in the backfield.

Aaron Rodgers Is Giving Steelers Fans A Real MVP Debate
Aaron Rodgers has given Steelers fans plenty to watch already, and now he has dragged himself into a familiar kind of conversation. The veteran quarterback, who has won the NFL MVP award four times and last took home the honor in 2021, is drawing fresh attention after a stretch that has reminded some observers of his best form. For a Pittsburgh team still measuring what Rodgers can mean in the bigger picture, any whisper of MVP talk is bound to travel fast.
Former defensive lineman Osi Umenyiora was among those willing to say the quiet part out loud, comparing Rodgers' current run to the kind of season that once carried him to the league's top individual prize. It is still just a prediction, of course, and plenty can change over a long season, but it speaks to how quickly Rodgers has shifted the conversation around the Steelers. When a quarterback with his rsum starts stacking up performances like this, the debate becomes less about nostalgia and more about whether he can keep it going long enough to make the idea real. Pittsburgh will be leaning on the same balance that has helped it stay afloat early, while Tampa Bay arrives with enough momentum to make this more than just another early October date on the calendar. Mike Tomlin Is Suddenly Back In A Steelers Story Fans Dread
Mike Tomlin is back in the middle of the kind of coaching rumor that Steelers fans have learned to follow nervously. According to reports, an ownership family in the NFC is weighing him as a candidate if its current coach misses the playoffs, a reminder that even after his long run in Pittsburgh, Tomlins name can still surface quickly whenever a major job might open up.
For Steelers observers, the part that matters most is not where the discussion starts, but how little is known about where it goes next. Tomlin has not confirmed any plans to return to coaching, even though he remains one of the top names expected to be in play this cycle, and his timeline and preferences are still unclear. He led Pittsburgh from 2007 to 2025, won a Super Bowl and finished with a 193-114-2 record, so any whisper of his next move naturally lands with extra weight around these parts. [Read more 🡒]
