Pam Oliver’s name still carries real weight with NFL viewers. Oliver has spoken publicly about the reason these moments sometimes happen. In a 2021 interview with Richard Deitsch, she said she has dealt with debilitating migraines for years, and that they can affect both her speech and her work on air. She also said the episodes can bring nausea and vomiting.
“They’re very debilitating for me,” Oliver said at the time. “They’ve been a problem for a very, very long time. It’s caused me to miss a few games over the span of my career.”
She has also described one occasion when she had to turn back just minutes from a stadium because she felt too sick to work. Even with those setbacks, she has kept returning to NFL sidelines season after season, and fans have grown used to voicing concern whenever the issue surfaces again.
With her long run in the league and her recent Hall of Fame honor, the reaction around Sunday’s game was less about criticism than worry for one of football broadcasting’s most familiar voices.
