The Pittsburgh Steelers’ second preseason game was the kind of night that sends fans spiraling. A shutout loss to the New York Jets on Friday - the first time Pittsburgh has been blanked in over a decade - came with enough rough edges to fuel plenty of concern. The offense couldn’t open running lanes or find any rhythm through the air, and the defense gave up 24 completions on 31 attempts for 226 yards and two touchdowns, with the Jets’ four quarterbacks combining for a 120.2 passer rating, per ESPN stats.
Still, the biggest lesson from the night might be that preseason can distort reality in a hurry.
That’s especially true when it comes to Steelers pass-rush standouts Alex Highsmith and Nick Herbig. Highsmith was nearly invisible against the Jets, logging 14 defensive snaps without a solo or assisted tackle, no pressure, and a 13-yard, one-touchdown allowance in coverage.
He was also part of the opening drive defense that let Geno Smith lead the Jets right down the field for a touchdown. Pro Football Focus handed Highsmith a 32.7 overall grade, the lowest on the team.
Through two preseason games, Highsmith’s PFF numbers sit at 43.7 overall and 50.1 as a pass rusher. Herbig, who recently broke the bank with a massive contract extension, has a 68.3 overall preseason grade.
None of that has changed what the Steelers know about those two players. Pittsburgh’s edge rush group is one of the league’s best, and Highsmith and Herbig are two-thirds of that trio.
Preseason football is a different animal anyway: the opponents are a mix of starters and backups, and Patrick Graham is calling a straightforward, vanilla defense. Add in the tiny sample size - Highsmith has played just 24 preseason snaps and Herbig 28 - and the numbers lose even more weight.
The same caution applies elsewhere on the roster. Jamel Dean, who was one of the most efficient cornerbacks in the league for the Tampa Bay Buccaneers last season, has also struggled through the preseason so far. And Zach Frazier’s exhibition grades haven’t exactly popped either; he posted a 46.7 PFF grade last preseason and has a 63.6 grade so far this year.
That’s why preseason stats can be so misleading. A hot August doesn’t guarantee anything once the games count, and a rough night doesn’t erase what a player really is.
Kenny Pickett is the clearest reminder of that. He put up a 94.7 overall PFF grade and a perfect 158.3 passer rating in the 2023 preseason, only to disappoint once the regular season arrived and get traded one offseason later.
So while the Steelers’ Week 2 showing was ugly, it’s still worth keeping the bigger picture in mind. Alex Highsmith and Nick Herbig are better than what the preseason box score says, and the same idea applies to the rest of the roster too.
