Jim Nantz and J.J. Watt had a broadcast moment on Sunday that quickly took on a life of its own.
During CBS’s Patriots-Steelers telecast, the booth got stuck on the same Mike McCarthy anecdote twice. Nantz opened by setting the scene.
“He’s about a mile from the home he was raised in,” Nantz said. “It’s just storybook for Mike.”
Watt then added the detail McCarthy had shared with them. “He talked to us about how emotional he got after that first win, getting the game ball from Aaron Rodgers, and just how special it was.”
Nantz then circled right back and repeated the point. “He got the game ball too, in the locker room from Aaron Rodgers after. It was quite a moment captured.”
The exchange drew attention fast, with Andrew Marchand describing it as an extreme example of Watt lines Nantz “didn’t seem to hear.” The New York Post called it Pete-and-Repeat. However it gets labeled, the issue was timing: Watt finished the thought, and Nantz immediately restated it as though the first version never made it out.
That awkward rhythm stood out even more because Watt is still settling into the No. 1 CBS booth.
He’s two games into the top chair after Tony Romo’s July OWI arrest in Milwaukee. CBS has kept Romo on leave, and the network still lists Watt with Nantz and Tracy Wolfson.
Week 1 already went by without Romo in that spot.
Nantz had previously said the job was to help Watt feel comfortable while he’s in the interim role, but Sunday sounded like two voices still learning where the other one stops. A producer in the ear can explain a missed cue. It doesn’t change what happened on the air.
Watt came over from the Ian Eagle crew, and CBS still has him in the No. 1 chair for Week 2 and Week 3, with Nantz and Wolfson alongside him. Romo’s court date remains set for Sept.
