Steelers Fans Loved Drew Allars Debut But His Real Test Is Next

Stepping into the spotlight, Drew Allar's promising debut is tempered by Mike McCarthy's emphasis on perfecting the essentials for long-term success.

Drew Allar’s first NFL preseason outing gave Steelers fans plenty to talk about, but the bigger takeaway in Pittsburgh is less about the splash plays and more about how the rookie is being taught to grow.

Allar opened his NFL debut by leading three touchdown drives against the Green Bay Packers, finishing 10 of 13 for 153 yards and three total touchdowns. The performance was enough to show why the buzz started immediately, and it also gave him a clear boost in confidence with his footwork and ability to play in rhythm.

Even with that fast start, Allar said he still sees room for a couple of plays to be cleaned up. Most of his production came underneath instead of pushing the ball downfield, but the timing and footwork matched what Mike McCarthy has been drilling in quarterback meetings.

“There were one or two plays I’d like to have back, which is how it’s going to be every week, no matter how good or how bad the performance is,” Allar said. “For me, it’s just continuing to be clean with my decisive decision-making, be clean in my footwork and protections, and master the fundamentals to allow me to go out there and play fast.”

That’s the lane McCarthy wants both Allar and fellow young quarterback Will Howard to stay in. The Steelers head coach said preseason football is valuable because it lets young passers handle the full operation - from commanding the offense and getting to the line of scrimmage, to responding when things break down around them.

“Preseason football is great for young quarterbacks on so many fronts,” McCarthy said. “You want to see them command the offense, take the play entry, get up to the line of scrimmage.

If they get in trouble, they have a proactive reasoning to do with it. But also if something goes wrong -- if the route’s not the way it should be or it doesn’t happen or the right tackle doesn’t do the right thing, to be able to react to that and not be surprised by it.”

McCarthy has made his message clear to the rookie quarterbacks: the goal is “brilliance in the basics.” For Allar, that emphasis hits home as he moves into his second game and tries to stack the same kind of clean habits that helped him shine in his first. The young quarterback had plenty of arm talent on display at Penn State, but the challenge now is turning the easy stuff into a consistent part of his NFL game.

Steelers Have A Joey Porter Jr. Decision Fans Can't Ignore

Joey Porter Jr. is still waiting on a long-term deal from Pittsburgh, and the wait has only added another layer to a situation the Steelers would probably prefer to have settled by now. The young cornerback is also on the Physically Unable to Perform List because of a back issue, which makes his standing one of the more closely watched items around the team as it moves through the offseason.

Interest from other NFL teams has already surfaced with Porter as a potential trade target, but a deal does not appear to be in the Steelers plans right now. If the two sides still do not have an agreement next offseason, Pittsburgh may have to consider using the franchise tag, keeping the conversation around Porter very much alive for another year. DK Metcalf Has Steelers Fans Doing A Double Take Again

DK Metcalfs first year in Pittsburgh gave the Steelers plenty to think about after they sent a 2025 second-round pick to Seattle to bring him in. He still finished as the team leader in receptions, yards and touchdowns, even with a two-game NFL suspension for conduct detrimental to the league after an incident involving a fan cutting into the back end of his season. When he came back for the Wild Card Round, he was part of the offense again, but the Steelers are clearly looking for more from him than just the outside threat he has long been known for.

Thats where the next wrinkle comes in. Pittsburghs coaching staff wants to move Metcalf around more and use him in the slot more often in the upcoming season, a shift that could change how defenses match up with him and how the passing game is built around him. For a player who already gave the offense its most productive season in those categories, the question now is whether the Steelers can turn that into something even bigger by giving him a different kind of role. DK Metcalfs New Steelers Look Has Fans Wondering Whats Next

DK Metcalfs first season in Pittsburgh has already taken a few turns, from the blockbuster trade that brought him over from Seattle in exchange for a 2025 second-round pick to the two-game suspension that ended his regular season early after an incident involving a fan. He did make it back for the Steelers playoff game, but the production was limited, leaving plenty of room for the conversation to shift from arrival hype to how the fit actually works moving forward.

Now the attention is on the next chapter under new head coach Mike McCarthy, who plans to use Metcalf more in the slot in 2026. It is a notable wrinkle for a receiver whose look and role already changed once when he landed in Pittsburgh, and it has fans wondering whether this will unlock something different or simply give the Steelers another way to get one of their biggest names involved.
