The Pittsburgh Steelers have already made a few bold moves this offseason, but Bleacher Report’s Kristopher Knox thinks they could still get more aggressive.
Pittsburgh has added former Indianapolis Colts standout Michael Pittman and kept future Hall of Fame quarterback Aaron Rodgers in place, setting itself up for a serious push during its win-now window. But with Week 1 of the 2026-27 season still more than two months away, Knox floated a three-team deal that would shake up the Steelers’ receiver room and send one of their biggest names elsewhere.
“In this hypothetical trade (Mac Jones to the New York Jets, DK Metcalf to the 49ers, and a Jets’ 2027 third-round pick and Brandon Aiyuk to the Steelers), the Jets enlist the Pittsburgh Steelers' help to acquire Jones,” Knox wrote last Wednesday.
“Pittsburgh sends wide receiver DK Metcalf to San Francisco while receiving draft compensation from New York and allowing the 49ers to offload Brandon Aiyuk. The 49ers have been practically begging teams to take Aiyuk off their hands.”
Knox also pointed out that Metcalf’s name has already started to surface in trade speculation, even if nothing concrete has materialized.
“While there hasn't been any real trade chatter involving Metcalf, he's been the subject of speculation ever since the Steelers acquired Michael Pittman Jr. and drafted Germie Bernard. Bleacher Report's Moe Moton, for example, named Metcalf on his list of cut and trade candidates shortly before April's draft began.”
For San Francisco, the appeal is obvious: moving on from Aiyuk. His early run with the 49ers was strong, with his start-and-stop burst and ability to shake defenders in space helping him earn second-team All-Pro honors in 2023 and play a role in the team’s steady playoff success.
But things have gone sideways since then. A devastating ACL injury and a contract dispute have dragged his tenure down, and the source of the friction has become hard to ignore. Aiyuk’s preferred landing spot is the Washington Commanders, where he could reconnect with former college teammate Jayden Daniels.
Still, Knox suggested Pittsburgh would make sense too. If Aiyuk wants a place where he can step in right away for a playoff team quarterbacked by Rodgers, the Steelers would check plenty of boxes.
And if the 49ers decide to release or trade him this summer, Pittsburgh should be right there near the front of the line.
