The Steelers are heading into the 2026 season with a contract standoff hanging over one of their biggest defensive pieces, and it’s already drawing blunt reactions inside the building.
Joey Porter Jr., one of Pittsburgh’s most important players on defense, is seeking a contract extension and is currently on the PUP list after aggravating a back injury during the team’s mobility workout on the first day of training camp, according to ESPN’s Brooke Pryor. That leaves the Steelers in what Pryor described as an “impasse” with the star cornerback.
New head coach Mike McCarthy said Monday that he understands the business side of the situation, even if it complicates things for a first-year staff trying to get ready for Atlanta in Week 1.
“I learned this in my early years as a head coach: You have to separate the business and football,” McCarthy said of whether he’d need to see Porter take the field to play him in Week 1 against Atlanta. “Sometimes it’s easier than others.
This is a challenge for both Joey and us because we’re first-year staff. We’ve seen them play, compete against Joey.
“I would love the opportunity to coach Joey Porter. I know our defensive guys would love the opportunity.
So we’re at an impasse right here, and you’ve got to respect that. Every one of us has a contract.
The organization, they have beliefs and so forth. But yeah, that’s just kind of where we are.”
Porter, for his part, made it clear he believes he belongs among the league’s top corners and wants to be paid accordingly.
“Definitely,” he said. “I feel like I was the lead guy since I’ve been in this league, and I’m happy that I’m getting the respect that I feel like I’m owed.”
Jalen Ramsey also backed his teammate strongly, saying the Steelers need to settle things with Porter and keep their secondary intact.
“We need the whole secondary out there. They gotta pay Joey Porter,” Ramsey said, per Steelers Depot.
“I’m overly in Joey’s corner. Joey needs to get compensated for being a valuable part of this secondary, and a valuable part of this defense and team.”
The Steelers reportedly brought Aaron Rodgers back and hired McCarthy with the idea of making a real playoff push. If that’s the goal, the pressure is on the franchise to resolve Porter’s situation.
