Steelers Eyeing Off-Ball Linebacker for Key Roster Boost

Steelers eye a strategic move to enhance their lineup by replacing a struggling high-dollar linebacker with a promising, affordable alternative in free agency.

The Pittsburgh Steelers are gearing up for free agency with several roster needs, and one area that deserves more attention is the off-ball linebacker position. Payton Wilson, despite some ups and downs in his second season in 2025, shows potential. However, Patrick Queen's performance last year left much to be desired.

Queen, a high-profile free agent signing in 2024, struggled significantly in coverage. According to Pro Football Focus (PFF), he allowed 74 receptions for 829 yards and a 114.1 passer rating in 2025. Additionally, his 20.4 percent missed tackle rate was among the worst in the league.

The Steelers have the option to move on from Queen's contract, saving a substantial $13.3 million. Enter Leo Chenal, a free agent who could be the ideal solution.

Chenal, drafted in the third round by the Kansas City Chiefs in 2022, has made a strong impression in his first four NFL seasons. Known for his instinctive play, he has consistently capitalized on his opportunities.

In 2024, he forced three fumbles, and last season he added two sacks and an interception to his resume. PFF has ranked Chenal as a top-20 linebacker over the past few seasons, a stark contrast to Queen's 43.5 overall grade in 2025, which placed him 79th out of 88 linebackers.

The financials are appealing too. PFF projects Chenal's contract at an affordable $6 million per season, a bargain for one of the league's top run-defending off-ball linebackers. The Steelers have previously thrived with players like Elandon Roberts, and Chenal could be a younger, more dynamic version.

Chenal's strengths complement Payton Wilson's skill set perfectly. While Wilson excels in space, Chenal could be the downhill enforcer in base and nickel packages. This pairing would allow Wilson to take on the green-dot linebacker role as a full-time starter.

By releasing Patrick Queen and signing Leo Chenal, the Steelers could become younger, more efficient, and cost-effective at the linebacker position. This move should definitely be on general manager Omar Khan's radar as free agency approaches.
