The New England Patriots have parted ways with quarterback Joshua Dobbs, opening the door for the Pittsburgh Steelers to consider a reunion with their former draft pick. This could be a full-circle moment for both Dobbs and the Steelers.
Originally selected by Pittsburgh in the fourth round of the 2017 NFL Draft, Dobbs didn't quite make the splash they hoped for initially. But now, with Mason Rudolph and 2025 sixth-round pick Will Howard as their only quarterback options, the Steelers might find Dobbs to be a valuable addition.
The Steelers are in a bit of a holding pattern, possibly eyeing Aaron Rodgers for a potential return. However, without Rodgers in the picture, Dobbs-nicknamed the Passtronaut-becomes one of the more intriguing free-agent quarterbacks available.
During his time with the Patriots, Dobbs mainly saw action in relief roles. However, his stint with the Arizona Cardinals in 2023, stepping in for Kyler Murray, showed he could be a capable, though perhaps not star-level, starter. The Cardinals' 1-7 record with Dobbs wasn't entirely on his shoulders; his ability to make plays was evident, even if turnovers occasionally cropped up.
In his time split between the Cardinals and the Vikings, Dobbs completed 62.8% of his passes, throwing for 2,464 yards, 13 touchdowns, and 10 interceptions. He also showcased his dual-threat capability, rushing for 421 yards and six touchdowns. His potential outshines what Rudolph has shown so far in their careers, which have interestingly intertwined over the years.
Rudolph initially edged out Dobbs for the backup role in 2019, leading to Dobbs' trade to the Jacksonville Jaguars. However, the Steelers brought him back off waivers in 2020, and now, history might repeat itself.
While the Patriots couldn't find a trade partner for Dobbs, it doesn't mean he's out of options. Pittsburgh could be the perfect fit, providing a familiar environment where Dobbs could thrive.
The market for Dobbs might not heat up until after the draft, depending on teams' decisions regarding rookie quarterbacks. Nonetheless, the Steelers could benefit from bringing him back, adding depth and competition to their quarterback room.
