Steelers Eye Major Contract Extension with Star Edge Rusher

Steelers' GM Omar Khan faces a pivotal offseason as he navigates complex contract negotiations to retain emerging star Nick Herbig amidst financial constraints and depth chart dynamics.

Steelers Face Key Contract Decisions as 2026 Season Approaches

As the NFL Combine unfolds in Indianapolis, the Pittsburgh Steelers find themselves with some crucial contract decisions to make. One of the most pressing issues surrounds outside linebacker Nick Herbig, a player who has quickly become a key component of their defense.

Drafted in the fourth round of the 2026 NFL Draft, Herbig has made a name for himself with his impressive pass-rushing skills. Over his career, he has steadily improved, amassing 16 sacks, with numbers climbing each season from 3.3 in 2023 to 7.5 last year.

Despite being the third option behind T.J. Watt and Alex Highsmith, Herbig’s growth has been undeniable.

With Watt and Highsmith secured under long-term contracts, the Steelers face a dilemma: how to keep Herbig happy and on the roster. General Manager Omar Khan is clear about his intentions.

“He’s obviously someone that we’d like to have around for a long time,” Khan stated at the Combine. “This defense has relied on strong outside pass rushers, and you can’t have too many of them.”

However, Khan acknowledges the challenge of satisfying Herbig’s desire for more playing time.

“Yeah, he wants to play more,” Khan admitted. “And I think we all like to have Nick on the field more.”

The question remains whether offering Herbig a starter’s salary, without the promise of a starter’s role, will be enough to retain him. Balancing the budget to accommodate three high-paid linebackers is another hurdle.

“There are some good discussions to be had,” Khan noted. “We’re not going to delve into specific negotiations, but there are definitely players we want to extend.”

Herbig isn’t the only player on the Steelers’ radar. Broderick Jones faces a complex fifth-year option decision due to a neck injury. Meanwhile, Joey Porter Jr. and Keeanu Benton have solidified their roles as starters, with Porter showing significant improvement in 2025.

“Joey gets better every year,” Khan praised. “He’s part of that draft class you guys asked about, and it’s been good.”

Tight end Darnell Washington has also emerged as a vital piece of the Steelers’ offensive puzzle.

For Khan, this offseason marks a new chapter as he navigates the complexities of extending contracts for his own drafted players. It’s a testament to the team’s successful drafting strategy, but it also underscores the financial challenges of maintaining a talented roster.
