Expect a whirlwind of changes in the Pittsburgh Steelers' secondary this offseason. With nearly $45 million in cap space, the Steelers have the financial flexibility to make significant moves, despite predictions of a quieter approach in free agency.
A host of key players, including Kyle Dugger, James Pierre, Miles Killebrew, Chuck Clark, Jabrill Peppers, and Asante Samuel Jr., are set to hit the free-agent market. Each played pivotal roles last season, and their potential departures could trigger a major overhaul in the secondary.
Jalen Ramsey's future with the team is particularly intriguing. Despite transitioning to safety mid-season and performing admirably, his high contract value might not align with his on-field contributions. Releasing or restructuring Ramsey's deal could free up substantial cap space, signaling more changes ahead.
Enter Jaquan Brisker, a potential blockbuster signing for the Steelers. The local Pittsburgh talent, originally drafted by the Chicago Bears in 2022, could be a perfect fit.
Known for his toughness, Brisker would seamlessly blend into the Steelers' defensive scheme. Pro Football Focus projects a three-year, $25 million contract for Brisker, which, while significant, is feasible if the Steelers part ways with Ramsey.
Releasing Ramsey could free up $19.5 million, making room for Brisker's projected $8.33 million annual salary.
However, signing Brisker won't be straightforward. With Mike Tomlin no longer at the helm, the Steelers might face challenges in attracting top talent.
Although Mike McCarthy is a capable coach, Tomlin's absence could impact recruitment. Brisker will have multiple suitors, and the Steelers will need to make a compelling offer to secure his services.
If Ramsey departs, landing Brisker would be a strategic move to solidify the secondary.
