Steelers Could Get A Needed Backfield Boost Against The Colts

Rico Dowdle's potential return could be the key to revitalizing the Steelers' offense as they prepare for a crucial clash with the Colts.

The Pittsburgh Steelers may be getting a real lift on offense soon, and Rico Dowdle is the name to watch.

Dowdle was listed as a limited participant on the team’s penultimate injury report ahead of the Week 5 matchup with the Indianapolis Colts, marking the second straight day he has been limited. That matters because he had not practiced at all over the previous two weeks after injuring his toe in Pittsburgh’s Week 2 loss to the New England Patriots.

His status for Sunday is still unresolved, with his game designation set to be revealed on the final report of the week on October 8. Even so, the fact that he’s now back on the practice field in any capacity is a strong sign that he’s moving in the right direction.

The injury first happened in the opening half against New England, when Dowdle was carted to the locker room before later returning after halftime. That return didn’t last, though, and he has been out since.

Dowdle described the sequence earlier this week when speaking to reporters.

"The first time I did it, I came to the sideline and I was like, 'I think my toe broke,'" Dowdle said. "So I went to the tent and it was dislocated and they popped it back in, did the X-rays.

Nothing was broken or whatever, but once they popped it back in, I felt good, so I'm like, 'I wanna go back in the game and play.' Dr.

[James] Bradley was like, 'No, we're playing on turf, think I'm gonna be done,' because when you get it, you hurt the plate at the bottom or whatever. So I ended up talking him into going back in, and he was like, 'If it pop out again, you've gotta be done,' and it popped out again, so I had to be done."

He also laid out the recovery focus, saying the key is "letting the tissue heal," since repeated dislocations could lead to surgery and a pin being inserted.

In Dowdle’s absence, Jaylen Warren has carried plenty of the load and then some. Over the last two games against the Cincinnati Bengals and Cleveland Browns, Warren has piled up 302 yards on 40 touches.

When healthy, Dowdle was still getting plenty of work in Pittsburgh’s offense, logging 19 touches for 65 yards over about a game-and-a-half. If he’s cleared to play against Indianapolis, that role should still be waiting for him.

The Steelers could use a jolt across the board against the Colts, and Dowdle would give them another backfield option if he’s active alongside Warren.

Steelers Veterans Already Facing Real Roster Pressure After Rough Start

A rough first quarter of the 2026 season has already put several Steelers veterans in an uncomfortable spot, as the early roster picture in Pittsburgh is starting to tighten. Performance issues, injuries and a deeper-than-expected level of competition have combined to make the margin for error smaller than it usually is this early, and a handful of familiar names are now fighting simply to stay in the conversation as the team evaluates its depth chart.

Asante Samuel Jr., Spencer Anderson, Rayshawn Jenkins, Rico Dowdle, Patrick Queen and Michael Pittman Jr. are all in the mix as players whose standing could shift if the early struggles continue. For the Steelers, the bigger question is not just who has underperformed, but how long the staff is willing to wait before making changes that could affect both the roster and the pecking order behind it. Steelers Suddenly Have A Real Chance To Build Momentum

A 2-2 start has the Steelers at a familiar crossroads entering Week 5, but the next stretch on the schedule gives them a real opening to change the tone of their season. Several opponents coming up carry their own injury concerns and roster issues, which could make this a favorable run for Pittsburgh if it can stay steady and take care of business.

Indianapolis, Tampa Bay, Philadelphia, Baltimore and Carolina all come with some degree of uncertainty on the other side, and that matters for a Steelers team looking for traction. With the early part of the season still leaving plenty unsettled, this feels like the sort of window good teams use to stack wins and bad teams waste, and Pittsburgh has a chance to show which path it is on. Steelers Suddenly Face A Jonathan Taylor Problem They Cant Ignore

Derrick Harmon landing on injured reserve with a toe injury leaves the Steelers making another adjustment up front, and rookie Gabriel Rubio is set to step into his role on the defensive line. It is the kind of reshuffle Pittsburgh can manage in the short term, but it also arrives at a time when the defense has already had trouble holding up against the run.

Jonathan Taylor and the Colts are the next test, and that is where the concern really sharpens for Pittsburgh. With the run defense still searching for consistency, the Steelers are staring at a matchup that could force them to prove the front can absorb the loss of Harmon without letting one of the leagues most dangerous backs control the game.
