Steelers Coach Linked to Titans Job After Recent Interview

Amid a flurry of coaching vacancies, Arthur Smith's potential return to Tennessee adds intrigue to his uncertain future with the Steelers.

Arthur Smith’s coaching journey has taken a few twists lately-and now, it could be coming full circle.

The Pittsburgh Steelers offensive coordinator is reportedly in the mix for the Tennessee Titans’ open OC job, a role that would mark a return to familiar ground. Smith, of course, isn’t just another name on the list-he’s got deep roots in Tennessee. He served as the Titans’ offensive coordinator from 2019 to 2020 and spent over a decade with the organization in various roles before making the leap to head coach.

Smith recently interviewed for the Titans’ head coaching vacancy, but that job ultimately went to Robert Saleh earlier this week. He also came up short in the Lions and Chargers head coaching searches. Still, Smith remains a name that carries weight in coaching circles, especially when it comes to offensive minds.

After his successful OC stint in Tennessee, Smith was hired in 2021 to lead the Atlanta Falcons. That chapter lasted three years before Falcons owner Arthur Blank decided to move in a different direction. While the results in Atlanta were mixed, Smith’s offensive philosophy and experience continue to make him a sought-after candidate-particularly for teams looking to stabilize or revamp their offensive identity.

What makes the Titans connection especially intriguing is the familiarity. Smith is a Memphis native and someone who climbed the coaching ladder within that very franchise. His understanding of the organization, its culture, and what it takes to succeed in that environment makes him a natural fit-should the Titans decide to go that route.

Interestingly, Smith also turned down a head coaching opportunity at the college level last year, when his alma mater, North Carolina, came calling. The Tar Heels eventually hired Bill Belichick, but not before making a strong push for Smith, who ultimately declined the offer despite his ties to the school.

In recent weeks, Smith has interviewed for two offensive coordinator jobs and has also been in the mix for two head coaching positions-including one that remains open with the Arizona Cardinals. With so many vacancies still unsettled, Smith is likely to land somewhere soon, but his current status with the Steelers is still unclear.

Whether he ends up back in Tennessee or heads in a different direction, one thing is certain: Arthur Smith’s name continues to be a prominent one as the NFL coaching carousel spins on.
