Steelers Bubble Players Face A Huge Preseason Test This Week

As the Steelers enter their second preseason game, six players must maintain standout performances to keep their NFL dreams alive.

The Steelers have reached the point of the preseason where one strong night can start to matter, and one quiet one can send a player sliding back into the crowd. After wrapping up training camp in Latrobe, Pittsburgh heads into Week 2 still sorting through a roster that is far from settled. The first preseason game gave a few fringe players a real boost, but now the challenge is simple: back it up.

That’s the line these players have to cross. A good opener is nice. Two in a row starts to change the conversation.

Max Hurleman, WR

Hurleman turned in a quietly strong showing in the opener and has a chance to keep building on it. The quarterback play helped the wideouts across the board, with all three passers performing well, but Hurleman still has to keep making plays on offense while also doing more on special teams. He’s still on the outside looking in, but another productive game could give him a real foothold.

Jamin Davis, LB

Davis may not be getting enough attention heading into Week 2, but he made his presence felt last Thursday. The veteran was around the football all game, and that kind of performance should translate again against the Jets.

As a former first-round pick, he has the kind of pedigree that can stand out against players lower on the depth chart. If he wants a spot on the 53-man roster, he has to outplay a crowded linebacker group.

Lew Nichols, RB

The backfield picture may be tightening quickly. Unless something changes soon, Kaleb Johnson’s time with the Steelers could be running out, which puts Nichols and Travis Homer in line for a possible battle over a roster opening.

Nichols has looked more like a natural runner, while Homer offers special teams value. For Nichols, the task is to keep showing enough on offense to make it impossible to ignore him.

Robert Spears-Jennings, S

There may only be one safety job up for grabs, and Spears-Jennings is in position to fight for it. The rookie looked like he belonged in his first preseason action, but that needs to continue.

His special teams work could end up being a deciding factor, and if the Steelers aren’t comfortable there, he could still be in danger of getting cut. For now, he’s in decent shape - but he can’t ease up.

Robert Tonyan, TE

Tonyan may have done enough in the opener to put himself on the roster, but he still has to finish the job. He has some internal support working in his favor, yet he remains a player on the edge of the final group.

Another strong outing should go a long way toward locking things down. He’s a veteran tight end, and another productive night would only help his case.

Kyler Baugh, DT

Baugh drew plenty of attention in Week 1, even if the stat sheet didn’t fully show it. What stood out was how often he was able to get after the quarterback and disrupt plays.

He’s still a long shot to make the 53-man roster unless injury opens the door, but he’s at least forcing his way into the discussion. Another solid showing would only strengthen that push.

Steelers Have A Joey Porter Jr. Decision Fans Can't Ignore

Joey Porter Jr. is still waiting on a long-term deal from Pittsburgh, and the wait has only added another layer to a situation the Steelers would probably prefer to have settled by now. The young cornerback is also on the Physically Unable to Perform List because of a back issue, which makes his standing one of the more closely watched items around the team as it moves through the offseason.

Interest from other NFL teams has already surfaced with Porter as a potential trade target, but a deal does not appear to be in the Steelers plans right now. If the two sides still do not have an agreement next offseason, Pittsburgh may have to consider using the franchise tag, keeping the conversation around Porter very much alive for another year. DK Metcalf Has Steelers Fans Doing A Double Take Again

DK Metcalfs first year in Pittsburgh gave the Steelers plenty to think about after they sent a 2025 second-round pick to Seattle to bring him in. He still finished as the team leader in receptions, yards and touchdowns, even with a two-game NFL suspension for conduct detrimental to the league after an incident involving a fan cutting into the back end of his season. When he came back for the Wild Card Round, he was part of the offense again, but the Steelers are clearly looking for more from him than just the outside threat he has long been known for.

Thats where the next wrinkle comes in. Pittsburghs coaching staff wants to move Metcalf around more and use him in the slot more often in the upcoming season, a shift that could change how defenses match up with him and how the passing game is built around him. For a player who already gave the offense its most productive season in those categories, the question now is whether the Steelers can turn that into something even bigger by giving him a different kind of role. DK Metcalfs New Steelers Look Has Fans Wondering Whats Next

DK Metcalfs first season in Pittsburgh has already taken a few turns, from the blockbuster trade that brought him over from Seattle in exchange for a 2025 second-round pick to the two-game suspension that ended his regular season early after an incident involving a fan. He did make it back for the Steelers playoff game, but the production was limited, leaving plenty of room for the conversation to shift from arrival hype to how the fit actually works moving forward.

Now the attention is on the next chapter under new head coach Mike McCarthy, who plans to use Metcalf more in the slot in 2026. It is a notable wrinkle for a receiver whose look and role already changed once when he landed in Pittsburgh, and it has fans wondering whether this will unlock something different or simply give the Steelers another way to get one of their biggest names involved.
