The Pittsburgh Steelers’ first preseason depth chart has already offered one of training camp’s clearest little tells: Will Howard is listed above Drew Allar.
Howard sits as the third-team quarterback, while Allar is behind him on the initial chart. That’s notable on paper, even if it doesn’t necessarily settle anything in the Steelers’ quarterback competition.
Howard is still battling Mason Rudolph for the backup job, and his placement ahead of Allar does not come as a major shock. The expectation entering camp was that Allar would spend the 2026 season in more of a redshirt role, using that year to clean up the rough edges in his game before making a bigger push in 2027, possibly alongside a rookie.
Still, the chart doesn’t quite match what many have seen in Latrobe so far. By most accounts, Howard has been outperformed by Allar during Pittsburgh’s stay at Saint Vincent College, and that could set up some interesting conversations if that trend continues.
Allar remains a work in progress, and there are going to be rough patches as he keeps developing in Mike McCarthy’s offense. Even so, he has shown real growth since arriving in Pittsburgh, and his arm talent has been impossible to miss. He’s already uncorked a number of impressive throws at Saint Vincent College, and he’ll get another stage next week when the preseason begins.
That’s when the pressure turns up for both quarterbacks, especially Howard, who has yet to take a snap against an opposing defense as a professional. A sixth-round pick in the 2025 NFL Draft, Howard dealt with a hand injury in training camp last year and spent time on the reserve/injured list through Week 11. He never appeared in a regular-season game as a rookie, which leaves him in a difficult developmental spot entering 2026.
Pittsburgh’s new coaching staff has reportedly been encouraged by Howard, and while Rudolph has the edge in the competition, Howard still has a path. He’s the younger option, he offers more upside, and he remains under contract for two more years.
But the message is clear: Howard has to make his case on the field. He needs strong work in practice and in camp if he wants to convince the Steelers he belongs.
He has not been a disaster, but there is room for improvement. The same goes for Allar, though the expectations around him have been different. Even so, a strong argument can be made that Allar has looked like Pittsburgh’s better young quarterback so far.
The race is far from finished, and these kinds of battles can change quickly in August. For Howard, though, the margin for error is shrinking. He can’t afford to lose any more ground if he wants to hold onto his place in the pecking order.
