Aaron Rodgers isn’t going anywhere at the top of the Steelers’ quarterback room, but the real camp conversation is happening a few spots lower.
With Mason Rudolph, Will Howard and rookie Drew Allar all trying to carve out roles behind the four-time MVP, Pittsburgh has a crowded depth chart and some real choices to make before the roster gets trimmed. And on Thursday, Mike McCarthy made it clear that Allar is already turning heads.
Speaking to SB Nation’s Jarrett Bailey, McCarthy said the rookie has been stacking good throws since camp opened.
"He’s doing what you want from a young player," McCarthy said. "These are tough practices because you’re not just repeating concepts. There hasn’t been a day where he hasn’t made a throw that makes you say, 'Okay, that’s a young man taking a step.'"
That kind of praise matters, especially this early. Allar has been running as the Steelers’ No. 4 quarterback in training camp, but the third-round pick appears to be settling in and competing well. His first real chance to show it in game action comes Aug. 13, when Pittsburgh hosts the Packers in its preseason opener.
The Steelers’ unofficial depth chart released Wednesday had Rudolph at No. 2, with Howard next and Allar behind him. Rodgers remains firmly installed as the starter, but the backup battle is the part of camp worth watching.
Rudolph has long had Mike Tomlin in his corner, but a new coaching staff and the presence of Howard and Allar have changed the picture. Howard has a year of experience behind Rodgers already, while Allar is the only one of the three quarterbacks brought in after McCarthy was hired.
Pittsburgh has until Aug. 30 to settle on how many quarterbacks it will keep.
