Steelers and Ravens Target Same Coach Again in Bold Offseason Move

Two AFC North rivals are circling the same top candidate as their head coaching searches intensify.

Steelers and Ravens Zero in on Anthony Weaver for Second Interviews Amid Coaching Search

The Pittsburgh Steelers and Baltimore Ravens are both eyeing the same name as their head coaching searches heat up - Miami Dolphins defensive coordinator Anthony Weaver. The AFC North rivals are each bringing Weaver in for a second interview, signaling serious interest in a candidate whose resume is steadily gaining traction across the league.

For Pittsburgh, this marks a shift from the virtual to the in-person phase of their interview process. The Steelers have already completed a virtual sit-down with Weaver and are now set to meet with him face-to-face later this week. That makes him the third candidate the Steelers are bringing in for an in-person interview, joining Minnesota Vikings defensive coordinator Brian Flores and former Cowboys and Packers head coach Mike McCarthy.

Not to be outdone, the Ravens are also moving Weaver into their second round of interviews. Baltimore has been aggressive since parting ways with longtime head coach John Harbaugh two weeks ago, interviewing or requesting interviews with 16 candidates - nearly double the number Pittsburgh has pursued so far. With their first round of interviews largely wrapped up, the Ravens are now narrowing their focus, and Weaver remains firmly in the mix.

Both teams will have to wait another week before they can speak with Rams defensive coordinator Chris Shula and passing game coordinator Nate Scheelhaase, as league rules prevent interviews with coaches still active in the postseason. The Rams advanced to the NFC Championship Game with a win over the Bears, delaying any potential meetings.

Weaver’s connection to both franchises adds an intriguing layer to the story. He spent four seasons as a defensive end for the Ravens from 2002 to 2005, facing the Steelers regularly in some classic AFC North battles. After wrapping up his playing career - which also included three seasons with the Texans - he transitioned into coaching, starting as a graduate assistant at Florida in 2010 and later coaching linebackers at North Texas.

His NFL coaching résumé is extensive. Weaver served as a defensive line coach for multiple teams before returning to Baltimore in 2021. There, he took on dual roles as the defensive line coach and run game coordinator, before being promoted to assistant head coach in 2022 while still overseeing the defensive front.

In 2024, Weaver made the move to Miami, joining Mike McDaniel’s staff as the Dolphins’ defensive coordinator - his first time holding that title at the NFL level. Despite Miami’s defensive ups and downs, Weaver’s leadership and schematic approach earned praise around the league.

But with McDaniel dismissed following the 2025 season, Weaver’s future in South Florida is uncertain. The Dolphins have yet to interview him for their own head coaching vacancy.

Now, both Pittsburgh and Baltimore are giving him a serious look - and not just because of his résumé. Weaver brings a blend of player experience, coaching versatility, and leadership presence that appeals to teams looking for a culture-builder as much as a tactician.

With both franchises standing at a crossroads, and with Weaver’s name now circling in multiple coaching conversations, the next week could be pivotal - not just for him, but for the direction of two AFC North rivals charting their next era.
