Steelers Aiyuk Hopes Take Hit After 49ers Stance

Steelers face a significant setback in their pursuit of Brandon Aiyuk as the 49ers reaffirm their commitment to keeping the talented wide receiver.

The Pittsburgh Steelers once had their sights set on snagging Brandon Aiyuk from the San Francisco 49ers. It seemed like a done deal, but negotiations hit a wall, and Aiyuk stayed put.

Fast forward, and Aiyuk inked a hefty four-year, $120 million extension with $45 million guaranteed in August 2024. Despite the payday, the relationship between Aiyuk and the 49ers has been rocky, fueling speculation of a potential split this offseason.

That kept teams like the Steelers hopeful-until now.

During the 2026 NFL Annual Meeting, 49ers owner Jed York made his intentions clear: he wants Aiyuk to stay in San Francisco. York’s straightforward comments are a blow to the Steelers' dreams of landing the 2023 All-Pro receiver.

"I would like to see [Aiyuk] play for us," York said, emphasizing the value they see in him. His stance is a strong indicator that Aiyuk will remain in the Bay Area, making it unlikely for Pittsburgh to reignite their pursuit.

The Steelers' current interest in Aiyuk is uncertain, especially after significant changes on both sides. Aiyuk suffered a serious injury, tearing his ACL and MCL, shortly after his big contract. Meanwhile, Pittsburgh has bolstered its receiving corps with notable additions.

Despite these changes, ESPN's Brooke Pryor highlighted Pittsburgh's ongoing need to strengthen their wide receiver lineup, even after acquiring Michael Pittman Jr. Aiyuk seemed like a viable option, but York’s comments might have closed that chapter.

Aiyuk's ability to bounce back to his former glory remains a question. How he would mesh with Pittsburgh's existing talent, like Pittman and D.K. Metcalf, and who would be delivering the passes, are key considerations.

Interestingly, York’s firm tone contrasts with the more cautious approach of 49ers head coach Kyle Shanahan. This mixed messaging leaves a sliver of hope that Aiyuk might still become available, but for now, it seems the Steelers will need to look elsewhere.
