Steelers Add Cignetti Brother to Coaching Staff in Rapid Hiring Spree

The Steelers continue reshaping their coaching staff with a familiar NFL name who brings both experience and family ties to the sidelines.

The Pittsburgh Steelers are continuing their offseason overhaul with yet another addition to the coaching staff - and this one brings a familiar name back into the NFL mix. Frank Cignetti Jr. is reportedly joining Mike McCarthy’s offensive staff, reuniting with the head coach after previously working together in Green Bay.

Cignetti isn’t new to the pro game or to McCarthy. The two last teamed up in 2018, when Cignetti served as the Packers’ quarterbacks coach. Now, as McCarthy looks to reshape Pittsburgh’s offense, he’s bringing in a coach with a deep résumé and strong ties to both the NFL and the college ranks.

Most recently, Cignetti was the offensive coordinator at Indiana University of Pennsylvania (IUP) in 2025 - his alma mater and a program with deep family roots. His brother, Curt Cignetti, is currently the head coach at Indiana University, and the coaching pedigree runs deep in the family.

Frank Cignetti Jr.'s coaching journey has taken him across a wide spectrum of football. He was the offensive coordinator for the St.

Louis Rams in 2015, then moved on to coach quarterbacks for the New York Giants from 2016 to 2017. More recently, he served as both offensive coordinator and quarterbacks coach at Pitt from 2022 to 2023, helping develop the Panthers’ passing game during that stretch.

For the Steelers, this hire fits a pattern. They’re clearly focused on building out a seasoned, well-rounded offensive staff - and Cignetti brings a wealth of experience at both the NFL and college levels. His history with McCarthy adds a layer of familiarity that should help streamline the offensive transition in Pittsburgh.

As the Steelers continue to retool behind the scenes, this move adds another layer to what’s shaping up to be a significant shift in offensive philosophy. Cignetti’s return to the NFL comes at a pivotal time, and his presence on the staff could be a key piece of how this offense evolves heading into 2026.
