Roethlisberger Floats Veteran QB Plan For Steelers

With Aaron Rodgers' future uncertain, Ben Roethlisberger suggests a strategic veteran signing to bolster the Steelers' quarterback options.

In the world of Pittsburgh Steelers football, quarterback discussions are heating up, and who better to weigh in than the legendary Ben Roethlisberger? Big Ben recently shared his thoughts on the Steelers' QB situation during an appearance on the Deebo & Joe podcast, and he’s got a plan mapped out that fans might find intriguing.

First on Roethlisberger's agenda is Aaron Rodgers. The veteran QB led the Steelers to an AFC North title last season, but with free agency looming, his return for 2026 remains uncertain. While some Steelers icons are growing impatient, Roethlisberger is more understanding, emphasizing the importance of Rodgers making a decision before the draft.

"If Aaron's going to take his time, that's fine," Roethlisberger noted. "Just as long as we know by the draft."

If Rodgers decides to hang up his cleats, the Steelers will be left with Will Howard and Mason Rudolph as their only quarterbacks. In that scenario, Roethlisberger believes the team should target a seasoned veteran, and he has a specific name in mind.

Enter Josh Dobbs. Recently released by New England, Dobbs is a familiar face in Pittsburgh, having started his career there in 2017. Roethlisberger sees him as a solid option if Rodgers steps away.

"Josh Dobbs is someone I'd consider," Roethlisberger said. "He's been here before, knows the organization, and could bring valuable experience."

Dobbs, with his aerospace engineering background and quick learning ability, could adapt swiftly to Mike McCarthy's system, making him a viable backup option. However, Roethlisberger doesn’t think the Steelers should use an early draft pick on a QB.

Instead, Roethlisberger advocates for giving Will Howard a shot at the starting role. Howard, a sixth-round pick in 2025, didn’t see action in his rookie year, but Roethlisberger is confident in his potential.

"I'm a big Will Howard fan," Roethlisberger expressed. "He's a proven winner in college, and I believe he deserves a chance to lead this team."

Roethlisberger suggests a patient approach, allowing Howard a couple of years to develop. If things don’t pan out, the Steelers could then look to the draft for a new QB.

"Build the team first, then plug in the quarterback," Roethlisberger advised. "If it doesn’t work with Howard, you’ll have a strong team ready for the next guy."

As for Rodgers, Roethlisberger is optimistic about his return. With new offensive weapons like Rico Dowdle and Michael Pittman, plus the chance to reunite with coach Mike McCarthy, Roethlisberger feels Rodgers might be tempted to stay.

"They're surrounding him with talent," Roethlisberger said. "And the McCarthy factor could be a big draw."

Ultimately, Roethlisberger believes Rodgers isn’t ready to walk away just yet, especially after a successful season in Pittsburgh. With all these pieces in play, Steelers fans have plenty to ponder as they await the next chapter in their team's quarterback saga.
