Rico Dowdle Poised for Surprising Role with Steelers This Season

Versatile playmaker Rico Dowdle prepares to embrace a dual role with the Steelers, blending his running prowess with unexpected quarterback capabilities.

The Pittsburgh Steelers have added a new dimension to their backfield by signing Rico Dowdle, a versatile running back who could also step in as an emergency quarterback if needed. Dowdle, known for his impressive back-to-back 1,000-yard rushing seasons, brings a unique skill set to the team.

Before making his mark in the NFL, Dowdle was a standout at A.C. Reynolds High School, where he showcased his dual-threat capabilities as a senior quarterback.

He set a Western North Carolina record with a staggering 63 touchdowns, demonstrating his prowess both on the ground and through the air. His high school career stats are eye-popping: 2,545 rushing yards and 51 touchdowns, complemented by 1,434 passing yards and 11 touchdown passes.

These achievements earned him the title of All-WNC Football Player of the Year.

Reflecting on his high school days, Dowdle shared with Missi Matthews how playing quarterback helped him understand defenses better. “High school is easier than college and the NFL, but seeing the defense from a quarterback’s perspective has been invaluable,” he noted. His experience as an emergency quarterback for the Cowboys and Panthers further underscores his adaptability.

Dowdle's journey has now led him to Pittsburgh on a two-year, $12.5 million contract after a productive stint with the Carolina Panthers, where he rushed for 1,076 yards and six touchdowns. Despite his past successes, Dowdle remains focused on the future.

“I’ve got to go do it again this year,” he emphasized. His determination to continue proving himself, especially as an undrafted player, highlights his relentless drive and ambition.

With Dowdle in the mix, the Steelers not only bolster their running game but also add depth and flexibility to their roster, making him a player to watch this season.
