Ravens Eye Lions’ Scottie Montgomery for OC Role as Jessee Minter Begins New Era in Baltimore
The Baltimore Ravens are wasting no time shaping their next chapter under newly hired head coach Jessee Minter. One of their first major moves? Interviewing Detroit Lions assistant head coach and wide receivers coach Scottie Montgomery for their offensive coordinator position.
Montgomery, 47, brings a wealth of experience and a reputation for player development that spans both college and pro football. Ravens fans might remember him from his previous AFC North stint-he was the Pittsburgh Steelers’ wide receivers coach from 2010 to 2012.
During that time, he worked with a talented group that included Hines Ward, Mike Wallace, Emmanuel Sanders, Antwaan Randle El, Jerricho Cotchery, and a young Antonio Brown. Montgomery played a significant role in the early development of Wallace, Sanders, and Brown-three receivers who each brought a different flavor to Pittsburgh’s passing attack.
After his time in Pittsburgh, Montgomery returned to his roots at Duke University, where he served as assistant head coach and offensive coordinator. That led to a head coaching opportunity at East Carolina from 2016 to 2018, and later a stint as offensive coordinator at Maryland. His journey back to the NFL began with the Indianapolis Colts, where he coached running backs from 2021 to 2022 before joining Dan Campbell’s staff in Detroit last season.
In Detroit, Montgomery stepped into a critical leadership role after Duce Staley left for the Carolina Panthers. He’s been a key figure in the Lions’ offensive resurgence, helping to develop a dynamic backfield tandem in Jahmyr Gibbs and David Montgomery, while also working closely with wideouts Amon-Ra St.
Brown and Jameson Williams. His versatility and command of both the run and pass game have made him an invaluable asset to Campbell’s staff.
“Scottie understands this game very well, top to bottom-pass game, protection, run game. He’s a huge asset for us and for me,” Campbell said back in October, underscoring Montgomery’s all-around football IQ and leadership.
For the Ravens, the search for an offensive coordinator comes as they turn the page with Minter at the helm. The former Michigan defensive coordinator was officially named Baltimore’s head coach last week. In his introductory statement, Minter emphasized the values and tradition that drew him to the franchise.
“I am truly honored to serve as the head coach of the Baltimore Ravens,” Minter said. “This is an organization where values, culture and tradition of excellence reflect everything I believe about the game of football and how it should be played. My family and I are thrilled to join the Ravens flock, and we can’t wait to make the fans, the great city of Baltimore and Maryland proud.”
As Minter builds out his staff, Montgomery represents an intriguing option-someone who’s walked the NFL sidelines, developed talent at every level, and understands what it takes to win in today’s league. If the Ravens are looking for a steady, innovative voice to guide their offense, Montgomery’s blend of experience and leadership could be exactly what they need.
