The Pittsburgh Steelers’ head coaching search took a sharp turn this month, and now we’re starting to understand why.
For a stretch earlier in the process, Chris Shula looked like a real contender to succeed Mike Tomlin. The current Los Angeles Rams defensive coordinator had reportedly drawn strong interest from the Steelers, and there was buzz that he was in serious consideration for the job. But when the dust settled, it was Mike McCarthy who landed the position-leaving many wondering what happened with Shula.
Now, we’re getting a clearer picture.
According to multiple reports, Shula’s virtual interview with the Steelers didn’t go well. One insider even described it as a “bombed” performance. That’s a strong word in coaching circles, especially when you're vying for one of the NFL’s most storied franchises.
It didn’t help that just days after that interview, Shula’s Rams defense gave up 31 points in the NFC Championship Game against the Seahawks. During the regular season, that same unit had allowed just 20.4 points per game. The timing wasn’t ideal, and it likely didn’t do him any favors with Pittsburgh’s front office.
Former Steelers defensive tackle Breiden Fehoko didn’t hold back after the Rams’ playoff exit, offering some pointed criticism of Shula. While his comments weren’t the deciding factor, they certainly added to the perception that Shula’s stock was slipping at the wrong time.
Shula wasn’t the only Rams coach passed over. Offensive coordinator Nate Scheelhaase also didn’t advance in the Steelers’ process.
Meanwhile, Shula drew brief interest from the Tennessee Titans, who ultimately chose Robert Saleh. The Cleveland Browns also extended an invitation, but as of now, no interview has taken place.
One team still in play? The Las Vegas Raiders.
They’re still searching for a new head coach after parting ways with Pete Carroll, and Shula remains on their radar. He’s already completed a virtual interview with the team, and veteran NFL reporter Vincent Bonsignore noted that he’s still in the mix.
Not everyone saw this coming. Former Steelers guard and Super Bowl champion Willie Colon admitted he was surprised by the McCarthy hire. Speaking on Good Morning Football, Colon said he thought Shula was the likely pick, citing his youth, defensive background, and experience on both sides of the ball.
“I was shocked by the hire,” Colon said. “I thought it was gonna be Chris Shula… But I get it.
McCarthy’s a proven winner. This is about stability and strategy.
The Steelers want to be competitive. Right now, in my eyes, they have the best coach in the division.”
With the head coaching spot filled, the Steelers now turn their attention to the offensive coordinator position. Arthur Smith has left to take the same role at Ohio State, opening up another key vacancy in Pittsburgh’s reshaped coaching staff.
The Steelers made a bold move in choosing McCarthy-a coach with a Super Bowl ring and years of experience-to guide them into their next chapter. As for Shula, his time may still come. But for now, he’ll have to wait for his next shot at the big chair.
