Patriots Quarterback Known as The General Dies at Just 58

Known for his leadership on and off the field, Michael Proctor leaves behind a lasting legacy in college and professional football.

Michael Proctor, a Murray State legend and former New England Patriots quarterback, has passed away at the age of 58. His loss is deeply felt across the football community, especially by those who watched him dominate at the college level and persevere through the professional ranks.

Proctor's name is etched into Murray State history for good reason. Standing 6-foot-4 and weighing 210 pounds, he was the kind of quarterback who commanded attention every time he stepped on the field.

A four-year starter for the Racers, Proctor didn’t just play the position-he owned it. He threw for a then-conference record 9,886 yards, earning All-Ohio Valley Conference honors twice and being named the league’s Player of the Year in 1989.

That kind of production doesn’t just happen; it’s the result of talent, preparation, and a relentless drive to compete.

Despite his impressive college résumé, Proctor went undrafted in 1990. But that didn’t stop him.

He signed with the New England Patriots as a rookie free agent, earning a shot at the NFL the hard way-by grinding his way onto a roster. He also had a stint with the Cleveland Browns before taking his talents north and then indoors, playing with the Montreal Machine in the World League, the Saskatchewan Roughriders in the CFL, and later in the Arena Football League with the Charlotte Rage.

In the arena league, Proctor showcased the same playmaking ability that made him a star in college. He threw for 3,492 yards and 51 touchdowns, while adding 12 more scores on the ground-numbers that speak to his dual-threat capability and leadership under center.

But Proctor’s legacy goes far beyond stats. His impact at Murray State still resonates.

His #11 jersey became a symbol of excellence for Racers football, inspiring generations of players who followed. Former Murray State quarterback Casey Brockman summed it up best, writing, “He was a great person and his smile could light up a room for hours.

Homecoming won’t be the same without him. Gone but never forgotten.”

Michael Proctor’s story is one of perseverance, talent, and heart. From setting records in the OVC to chasing his dream across multiple leagues, he left a lasting impression everywhere he played. His legacy lives on-in the numbers, in the memories, and in the hearts of those who knew him.
