The 2025 NFL Draft was a spectacle of organized chaos, with each team starting with its own first-round pick-a rarity in itself. As expected, the night was full of surprises.
The Jacksonville Jaguars made waves by securing Travis Hunter through a strategic move with the Cleveland Browns. Meanwhile, the Atlanta Falcons executed a trade that left many scratching their heads, and the New York Giants made a bold play for Jaxson Dart by trading away Day 2 picks.
Trades are the lifeblood of draft night drama, and last year’s deals have set the stage for another thrilling first round. As we look ahead to April, a few teams are poised to make significant moves on Day 1.
Pittsburgh Steelers
The Steelers are in an interesting spot. They traded George Pickens to the Dallas Cowboys for a third-round pick after last year’s draft, aiming to gather assets for a potential franchise quarterback. The recent hiring of Mike McCarthy and the Aaron Rodgers rumors might shift their strategy, but the need for a quarterback remains pressing.
This draft class offers Fernando Mendoza as the standout quarterback with a first-round grade. However, if Pittsburgh has its eyes on Ty Simpson, they have options.
They could select him at No. 21 if available, or trade up to secure him ahead of quarterback-hungry teams. Trading down seems unlikely if Simpson is their target.
Alternatively, they could use their collection of Day 2 picks-Nos. 53, 76, 85, and 99-to move back into the first round, securing a fifth-year option on Simpson, especially if Rodgers is expected to take snaps in Year 1.
Philadelphia Eagles
Howie Roseman is known for his draft day maneuvers, and with the Eagles entering a new phase, they’ll be looking to inject fresh talent into an aging roster. With an expensive yet capable quarterback, Philadelphia is eyeing premium positions at No. 23.
The draft class aligns well with their needs, offering late first-round talent at offensive tackle and receiver, particularly if A.J. Brown becomes trade bait.
The Eagles are also well-positioned in the edge rusher and safety markets. With surplus picks at Nos. 54, 68, and 98, the Eagles have the flexibility to entice teams like the Buffalo Bills or Los Angeles Chargers to trade out of Round 1, allowing Philadelphia to make a double splash.
Jacksonville Jaguars
Jaguars GM James Gladstone has emphasized the value of draft capital, explaining their quiet free agency. Despite not having a first-round pick, Jacksonville holds four Day 2 selections, including the last pick in Round 3, giving them leverage.
As a disciple of Les Snead, Gladstone isn’t afraid of bold moves. While trading into the first round might not be earth-shattering, addressing needs at linebacker and cornerback could make it worthwhile. And let’s not forget the potential for a blockbuster involving Brian Thomas Jr.
In the ever-unpredictable world of the NFL Draft, these teams are primed to keep us on the edge of our seats.
