Steelers Eye Romeo Doubs as Potential Offseason Addition - and It Makes a Lot of Sense
There’s no sugarcoating it: the Pittsburgh Steelers need help at wide receiver. It’s been a persistent issue for the past two seasons, and with a new head coach in town and a mountain of cap space to work with, this offseason feels like the time to finally address it in a meaningful way.
Enter Romeo Doubs - a name that’s starting to gain traction as a potential free-agent target for Pittsburgh. The Green Bay Packers wideout has quietly put together a solid three-year stretch, and his skill set could be exactly what the Steelers need to complement their current offensive weapons.
At the center of this connection is Mike McCarthy, the newly-hired Steelers head coach, who’s expected to lean into reshaping an offense that ranked just 20th in EPA per play last season. That’s not going to cut it in today’s NFL, especially in an AFC stacked with elite quarterbacks and explosive offenses. If Pittsburgh wants to keep up, they’ll need more than just a scheme change - they’ll need reliable playmakers.
Doubs fits the mold. Since 2024, he’s graded out in the 75th percentile in receiving against single coverage, according to Pro Football Focus.
That’s a valuable trait for a team that already has a true No. 1 in D.K. Metcalf but needs a consistent secondary threat to keep defenses honest.
Doubs has also posted a 78.6 PFF receiving grade over the past three seasons - a sign of steady production and growth.
He’s not just a stats guy either. At 25 years old, Doubs is entering his prime and already has a year of chemistry with Aaron Rodgers from their time together in Green Bay back in 2022.
That rookie campaign saw Doubs haul in 42 catches for 425 yards and three scores over 13 games. Fast forward to 2025, and he upped the ante with 55 receptions, 724 yards, and six touchdowns - including a solid showing against the Steelers themselves in Week 8, when he caught three passes for 44 yards at Acrisure Stadium.
The Rodgers connection is worth keeping an eye on. McCarthy made it clear during his introductory press conference that he “definitely” wants Rodgers back for another season. The two have stayed in contact since McCarthy took the job in Pittsburgh, and while Rodgers hasn’t committed to returning just yet, the door is clearly open.
McCarthy even addressed the situation during a Friday appearance on “The Pat McAfee Show,” saying he’s spoken with Rodgers “a number of times” over the past week. For now, though, Rodgers is taking time away from the game - a move that’s not uncommon for veteran quarterbacks at this stage in their careers.
But if Rodgers does return, reuniting him with Doubs under McCarthy’s system could accelerate the offense’s development. Doubs already knows the terminology, understands the expectations, and has shown he can produce in a complementary role. That kind of familiarity can’t be overstated, especially in a transition year with a new coaching staff and potentially a new (or returning) quarterback under center.
The Steelers also have the financial flexibility to make a move like this. With over $45 million in projected cap space - eighth-most in the league - they’re in a strong position to be aggressive in free agency. And with wide receiver being such a clear need, targeting a player like Doubs, who brings both upside and familiarity, would be a smart use of those resources.
Nothing’s official yet, and plenty can change between now and the start of free agency. But if Pittsburgh is serious about revamping its offense and giving Rodgers (or whoever’s under center) the tools to succeed, Romeo Doubs should be near the top of their list.
