Steelers President Rooney Stands Firm on the Rooney Rule Amid Legal Challenge
In the face of a legal challenge from Florida Attorney General James Uthmeier, Pittsburgh Steelers team president Art Rooney II remains steadfast in his support of the Rooney Rule. This rule, a cornerstone of the NFL's diversity-hiring efforts, was championed by Rooney’s father, Daniel Rooney, and has become integral to the league's hiring practices.
Uthmeier recently addressed a letter to NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell, questioning the legality of the Rooney Rule under Florida law. He argued that the rule, which requires NFL teams to interview minority candidates for key positions, violates state legislation by enforcing race-based hiring considerations.
As the NFL's annual league meeting kicks off in Phoenix and with the NFL Draft on the horizon, Uthmeier's challenge has brought renewed attention to the rule. However, Rooney has made it clear that the rule is here to stay.
“There were some questions about it,” Rooney noted, referring to discussions at the league meetings. “But no action was taken.
It’s not a hiring rule per se, and we’re comfortable with where we stand. The NFL owners are not in favor of abandoning it, and we’ll be engaging in conversations to clarify our position.”
The Rooney Rule mandates that teams interview at least two minority candidates for head coach, general manager, and coordinator roles, and one minority candidate for the quarterback coach position. This approach aims to ensure a diverse pool of candidates is considered for leadership roles.
Commissioner Goodell echoed Rooney’s sentiments, emphasizing the league's commitment to diversity. “Our values remain unchanged. We believe diversity benefits the NFL, and the Rooney Rule aligns with evolving laws,” Goodell stated.
While it's uncertain whether Uthmeier will pursue further legal action, the NFL's position is clear: the Rooney Rule is an essential part of its commitment to diversity and inclusion, and it’s not going anywhere.
