Najee Harris NFL Future Just Took Another Brutal Turn

Once a promising talent for the Steelers, Najee Harris's recent release from the Giants highlights his fall from grace and uncertain future in the NFL.

Najee Harris’ latest NFL stop has already reached a rough ending.

The New York Giants are releasing the running back, a move that comes as a surprise after he had appeared to be carving out a larger role in the offense. Instead, the Giants have cut ties, and the decision puts Harris in a precarious spot as he tries to keep his career moving.

Since leaving the Pittsburgh Steelers in March of 2025, Harris has been dealing with injuries that have kept him from getting back on track. His time with the Los Angeles Chargers was derailed by a torn Achilles, a setback that sent him into a difficult rehab process.

He later landed with the Giants this past summer and, not long ago, had worked his way into more meaningful offensive chances. As recently as this past weekend, he had moved from roster long shot to someone seeing real opportunities.

That momentum did not last. Harris started for New York against the Saints, and with Cam Skattebo in the doghouse, it looked like he might finally get a shot to run with the job. Instead, the Giants leaned more on the backs behind him as the game went on, and Harris lost the starting role during the contest.

His production with New York never made a strong case for more. Harris finished with 99 rushing yards on 31 attempts this season, a number that made it hard for the Giants to keep him in a featured spot. With other options available at the position outside of Skattebo, the writing was on the wall.

For Harris, the concern now is bigger than one release. The way his career has gone after Pittsburgh has been a sharp fall from the consistent back the Steelers once had. There may still be a path for another team to view him as a fill-in if a starter gets hurt long term, but the runway is short and the market for running backs is usually unforgiving.

Pittsburgh, meanwhile, looks justified for moving on when it did. Jaylen Warren has grown into a star for the Steelers, and Harris likely would have commanded a decent payday to stay. Instead, his recent injury history and now this release have left his NFL future in serious doubt.

Steelers May Finally Be Seeing Their D-Line Bet Pay Off

Keeanu Bentons recent stretch has given the Steelers something they badly needed along the defensive front: signs that a long-term investment might be starting to pay off. With Derrick Harmon sidelined by a foot injury, Benton was pushed into a bigger role and answered with an active showing in Pittsburghs overtime win over Tampa Bay, the kind of disruptive performance that can change the tone of a defensive line and reinforce why the team committed to him in August.

Patrick Graham said Bentons work against the Buccaneers stood out, and the Steelers have reason to believe theres more to come. The question now is how much of that impact can carry forward once the rotation settles again, because the teams bet on Benton was never just about one good afternoon. It was about finding a linchpin up front, and the early returns suggest the payoff may be coming into view. [Read more 🡒]

Steelers Still Have One Trade Deadline Problem Fans Can't Ignore

Even after a busy stretch of roster patching, the Steelers still have work to do before the 2026 NFL trade deadline becomes a real point of pressure. Pittsburgh has already added Sean Murphy-Bunting, Terrell Smith and Marquez Valdes-Scantling, but those signings only underline how many spots still deserve attention if the front office wants more stability and depth heading into the next stage of the roster build.

Guard remains a glaring question, and the secondary and receiving corps could use more help as well, with cornerback, linebacker and wide receiver all sitting on the list of needs. The Steelers are clearly monitoring ways to upgrade, but for now the bigger story is not what they have done, it is how many holes still remain and which direction they will choose when the market presents them with a real option. Steelers May Need A Bold WR Move Before This Gets Worse

Pittsburghs wide receiver room has already been stretched thin by injuries, and that has pushed the conversation beyond patchwork fixes and into the kind of move that can change the rest of the season. The idea making the rounds is a trade target from Tampa Bay, a proven veteran who has built a strong career while still offering enough current production to make the fit worth considering, even if the price tag would not be simple.

The problem for the Steelers is that any meaningful addition comes with layers of risk, from the financial commitment to the health questions surrounding the players recent seasons. He has dealt with a serious ankle injury and a fibula issue, and the appeal of adding another established pass catcher has to be weighed against how much uncertainty Pittsburgh can afford in a room that is already short on reliable bodies.
