Najee Harris Just Added To A Brutal JuJu Reality Check

With his recent release from the Giants and an ongoing injury, JuJu Smith-Schuster's NFL future looks increasingly uncertain as former teammates diverge on their career paths.

The Giants’ roster moves this week put JuJu Smith-Schuster in a tough spot, and the latest report from ESPN’s Adam Schefter only sharpens the concern. New York is expected to release the veteran receiver after adding Najee Harris, a move that could leave Smith-Schuster without a clear path forward as the regular season approaches.

Smith-Schuster’s situation has been trending the wrong way for a while. Over the past two weeks, he has been dealing with a left knee injury, which kept him out of New York’s preseason game against the Minnesota Vikings. Now, with the Giants opening up a spot for Harris, Smith-Schuster is the one suddenly on the outside looking in.

Harris’ arrival gives New York a back who can help in a limited role, but the fit is about more than just carrying the ball. The former Steelers running back is being brought in for depth, and his pass protection could matter right away after Tyrone Tracy Jr. missed a block that led to Jaxson Dart taking a vicious hit against Minnesota.

That part of the move helps Harris, but it leaves Smith-Schuster in a far more fragile position. He had been trying to earn a place in a Giants receiver group that was wide open behind Malik Nabers, yet the knee issue kept him from making the kind of push he needed. Being released while still managing that injury makes the timing especially rough.

At this point in the calendar, teams want players who can either step in immediately or at least compete for a roster spot. Smith-Schuster doesn’t look like either right now. His recent run has also made the picture even murkier, with the last three seasons showing him as no more than a WR4/5 option.

For Harris, the road back has been bumpy too. After leaving Pittsburgh, he signed with Los Angeles last year, only to tear his Achilles in his third game. He spent the last several months rehabbing before landing with the Giants, who need depth and are apparently willing to give him another shot.

Even so, the version of Harris New York is getting is not the same player Pittsburgh once leaned on. With the Steelers, he was a true workhorse, logging at least 280 touches in each of his four seasons there. Now, the expectation is much smaller - a few snaps here and there, not the offense running through him.

For both players, the Steelers years still stand as the high point. Now they’re each trying to hang on, with their best days behind them and a spot on a 53-man roster suddenly very much in question.

Najee Harris Next Stop Says Plenty About His NFL Value

Najee Harris has found another landing spot, and it says something about how the league still views the former Steelers running back as a useful piece. After moving on from Pittsburgh and spending time with the Chargers, Harris is now headed to New York, where the Giants have turned to him for added backfield help behind rookie Cam Skattebo.

For the Giants, the appeal is straightforward: Harris brings experience, size and a chance to steady a rushing group that can use more depth. The next step in his career comes with a health question attached, though, and his ability to work his way back into form will determine how much of a role he can carve out in New York's offense. Steelers May Have Dodged A Frustrating Draft Mistake With Makai Lemon

The Steelers had wide receiver Makai Lemon in play during the draft, only to watch Philadelphia take him earlier and remove him from the board. Since then, Lemons early pro start has been slowed by a hamstring injury that has kept him out of multiple practices and offseason activities, a reminder that draft-day disappointment does not always stay that way for long.

Pittsburgh moved on by taking offensive tackle Max Iheanachor instead, and the early return has at least given the Steelers a steadier spring story to follow. Iheanachor has been active in training camp despite a minor injury setback, while Lemon is still working through the kind of availability issues that can make a promising name feel a lot less painful to miss. Steelers Future Just Took A Brutal Hit Despite Drew Allar Hope

The Steelers have at least one reason to feel better about the future in rookie quarterback Drew Allar, whose preseason showing turned heads after he directed three touchdown drives in a game. Head coach Mike McCarthy was upbeat about what he saw from Allar, and the early returns only added to the sense that Pittsburgh may have found a long-term answer at the most important position.

Even so, the bigger picture around the franchise remains bleak. ESPNs latest NFL future outlook slotted the Steelers near the bottom of the league at No. 30, a harsh verdict built on coaching, the roster outside quarterback, the quarterback spot itself, and the front office. For a team that has spent years trying to keep one eye on the present and one on what comes next, that kind of ranking is a blunt reminder that one promising rookie does not erase the work still ahead.
