Mike McCarthy’s first season in Pittsburgh has the Steelers looking like a team in full control, and one analyst says the only thing keeping the coach from getting the kind of respect reserved for the NFL’s biggest names is the way he looks.
After Pittsburgh rolled past the Cleveland Browns 27-6 to move to 6-2 and seize command of the AFC North heading into the bye week, John Middlekauff argued on 3 and Out that McCarthy belongs in the same conversation as some of the league’s most respected coaches.
“Mike McCarthy’s pretty good. He has the exact same resume as Mike Tomlin, as John Harbaugh, as Sean Payton.
He just doesn’t have the PR campaign. If Mike McCarthy were 50 pounds lighter, I think we would talk about him a lot differently.”
Middlekauff doubled down on that point by tying McCarthy’s image to weight-loss medicine use around the sport.
“In a day and age where definitely all these college coaches, Liam Cohen, pumping the ‘don’t eat the food shot’ through their veins,” Middlekauff said. ”
“Mike’s just eating more hamburgers. But I think he’s doing a f*cking phenomenal job.
He is scheming a 300-pound tight end wide open. I think the Steelers are playing really well.
Now, their ceiling because of their offensive weapons Their weapons right now has got to be a little limited, but they kick their ass with basically no wide receivers. Mike McCarthy deserves some credit.”
The Steelers have now won four straight games, and McCarthy’s debut season has gone far beyond the early skepticism that came with his hire to replace Mike Tomlin. For now, though, McCarthy is focused less on outside praise and more on what comes after the bye.
“This will be really good for us,” McCarthy said. “I look to come out of this bye really healthy.
We got a big three-game stretch that I’m already looking forward to. This three-game stretch, two on the road and come home to play on Friday here after Thanksgiving.
This is a big three-game stretch where we need to get the next sequence done. This will get us what we need.”

George Pickens Is Reminding Steelers Fans Why Pittsburgh Moved On
George Pickens has given the Cowboys enough flashes this season to keep the conversation about his talent alive, but the old concerns that followed him out of Pittsburgh have not gone away. The wide receiver was traded from the Steelers two years ago, and the move always carried the sense that the on-field upside was being weighed against the off-field headaches that had become part of the package.
Those worries are resurfacing in Dallas, where Pickens has also been managing a shoulder injury while trying to settle in. For Steelers fans, it is a familiar reminder of why the organization chose to move on: the production was real, but so were the frustrations, and the latest chapter suggests the same questions are still attached to his game. T.J. Watt Just Added More Weight To A Familiar Browns Problem
The Steelers Week 8 win over Cleveland was another reminder of how quickly T.J. Watt can tilt a game. Pittsburgh rolled to a 27-6 victory, and Watt was again at the center of it, leading the defense with 2.0 sacks as the Steelers kept building on a strong start to the season.
For the Browns, the frustration is becoming familiar whenever Watt lines up across from them. His latest impact only adds to a long-running problem for Cleveland, and it comes as Pittsburgh continues to lean on his production while sitting at 6-2. Watt has been a steady force all year, and the Browns are just the latest team to be left dealing with the aftermath. [Read more 🡒]
Steelers Fans Are Asking If This 6-2 Start Feels Different
The Steelers head into their bye week at 6-2, and for once the conversation around a strong start does not feel like it is automatically drifting toward the usual cautionary tale. There is still plenty to sort through, especially with injuries and a demanding schedule ahead, but this group has given fans a reason to wonder whether the early record is more than a temporary surge.
What makes the discussion interesting is the sense that this team may be built a little differently than some recent Steelers squads that flashed early and then faded when the season tightened. The next stretch will say a lot about whether Pittsburgh can keep stacking wins and turn a promising first half into something that lasts into January. [Read more 🡒]
