Mike McCarthy Has Steelers Fans Reconsidering This Teams Ceiling

Merril Hoge and other NFL analysts are applauding Mike McCarthy's surprising success leading the Steelers to a strong start this season.

The Steelers are sitting at 6-2, and the early verdict on Mike McCarthy’s first season in Pittsburgh is getting louder by the week: this team is working.

Aaron Rodgers has settled in and is playing at a solid level, and the offense has now strung together four straight wins. That was never going to be the simple part of this transition.

With Mike Tomlin out of the picture and McCarthy stepping in, the questions were everywhere. Would Pittsburgh look like the same old team?

Would the offense finally run cleaner? Or was this headed toward the franchise’s first losing season in more than 20 years?

Right now, the answer is leaning hard toward the positive.

That’s why the apologies are starting to roll in during the bye week. A lot of people in the media missed on this group, at least so far, and Damien Woody was willing to say it out loud.

“I have to admit, I did not envision the Pittsburgh Steelers playing as well as they’re playing so far as we approach the halfway point,” Woody said on The OG Football Show. “I got to give my flowers to Mike McCarthy.”

Woody’s praise wasn’t just about the record. He pointed to the way McCarthy has steadied a veteran roster and helped unlock an offense that’s doing real work.

Pittsburgh is 13th in total yards per game at 351.8 and 14th in rushing at 117.9. After years of struggling to run the ball, McCarthy and offensive line coach James Campen have given the Steelers something they could actually lean on.

“Mike McCarthy has done a hell of a job,” Woody said. “People frown upon him, but all Mike McCarthy has done is win in Green Bay; he won in Dallas, and now in his first year in Pittsburgh he has them sitting atop the AFC North… Mike McCarthy, Aaron Rodgers and company are pushing all the right buttons. The Pittsburgh Steelers, to me, are the absolute surprise so far.”

Former Steelers running back Merril Hoge took the praise even further, saying McCarthy’s body of work belongs in the Hall of Fame conversation.

“If you took his resume and his credentials and stacked it up to Hall of Famers, it’s very similar and better in some ways,” Hoge said. “He gets no credit for that.

Nobody thinks of him like that. But he can stack up against not only great ones that are still coaching today, but those that sit in the Hall.”

The numbers around Pittsburgh keep backing up the buzz. The Steelers lead the NFL in sacks, Jaylen Warren is in the mix for Offensive Player of the Year, and he has more rushing yards than Derrick Henry, Jonathan Taylor, and Christian McCaffrey.

The road ahead is about to get a lot tougher. Pittsburgh’s next stretch includes Philadelphia, Denver, Houston, Jacksonville, and Baltimore twice. The Ravens are always a problem, and the Steelers haven’t won in Philadelphia since 1965.

Still, the bigger picture is hard to ignore. The Steelers are beating expectations, and historically, 90% of teams that begin 6-2 get to the playoffs. The question now is whether this group can turn that start into a real run - and maybe its first playoff push in a full decade.

Steelers Need Aaron Rodgers To Change Whats Holding This Offense Back

Aaron Rodgers has kept the Steelers operating in a way that looks familiar to him, with a quick, spread-out passing approach that shows up again and again when the field shrinks near the goal line. Even with Pittsburghs ground game humming and the offense showing real efficiency on the run, the overall structure still tilts toward the pass in scoring territory, and that has left the unit searching for a better finish when drives get tight.

The bye week arrives at a useful time for a team that has found success on the ground but has not fully leaned into it where it matters most. If the Steelers want to turn more of those red-zone trips into touchdowns, the next step may be less about Rodgers doing what he has always done and more about the offense embracing the part of the attack that has carried it so far. Alex Highsmith Sees Something Different In This Steelers Defense

The Steelers defense looked a lot sharper in the rematch with Cleveland, holding the Browns to season lows in points and rushing yards on the way to a 27-6 win. It was the kind of performance that fit what Alex Highsmith has been seeing from that side of the ball lately, with Pittsburghs defense ranking third in scoring defense and sitting third in takeaways through eight games.

Highsmith pointed to a noticeable difference in how the unit has operated since defensive coordinator Patrick Graham changed where he calls the game from. Players have credited that move with helping the communication and overall flow, and the results have shown up in the way Pittsburgh has tightened the screws on opponents. The bigger question now is whether that cleaner operation can keep holding up as the schedule gets tougher. [Read more 🡒]

Steelers Player Christian Kuntz Just Earned Recognition Pittsburgh Fans Will Love

Christian Kuntz has built a reputation in Pittsburgh that goes well beyond his work as the Steelers long snapper. Since taking over the role in 2021, he has used his platform to stay active in the community, and his foundation, Kuntz 4 Ki6s, has helped raise significant funds for local families while also backing events and partnerships aimed at underserved youth.

His latest recognition fits that pattern. Kuntz was honored as the Week 9 NFLPA Community MVP after making a $10,000 donation tied to a new resource room at Pittsburgh Morrow, another example of how he keeps finding ways to turn his visibility into support for people around the city. [Read more 🡒]
