As the Pittsburgh Steelers and the rest of the NFL eagerly await Aaron Rodgers' decision about his future with the team, whispers are circulating about Kirk Cousins potentially stepping in as a backup plan for the Steelers.
In a recent conversation with former NFL coach Jon Gruden, Cousins made it clear that retirement isn't on his radar as he approaches his 38th birthday in August.
Kirk Cousins: Ready for the Next Challenge
Feeling "rejuvenated" after moving past his Achilles injury from over two years ago, Cousins expressed his readiness for a new opportunity. "Playing last year and finishing strong with a 4-0 run really boosted my spirits," Cousins shared, according to Troy Montgomery from Steelers Depot. "I'm feeling as healthy as ever."
After tearing his Achilles in October 2023, Cousins lost his starting role with the Atlanta Falcons to rookie Michael Penix Jr. in December 2024. However, Cousins showed he still has plenty to offer, ending the Falcons' 2025 season with a 5-2 record, 10 touchdown passes, and five interceptions over the last seven weeks.
Reports suggest Rodgers is expected to rejoin the Steelers before their offseason workouts kick off on April 6. Meanwhile, Cousins appears content to weigh his options without rushing into a decision.
Could Cousins Be the Steelers' Answer?
Cousins remains open-minded about his next move. "I'm not sure where or under what circumstances, but I'm eager to get back on the field next year," he said. "I'm ready for another shot."
It's uncertain whether Steelers GM Omar Khan and head coach Mike McCarthy would prefer Cousins over backup Mason Rudolph or untested rookie Will Howard. While Cousins is clearly available, the Steelers seem prepared to give Rodgers the time he needs to decide on his 2026 plans.
