The Pittsburgh Steelers are facing a new chapter after losing their standout team MVP, Kenneth Gainwell, to the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. Gainwell inked a two-year deal worth $14 million with the Bucs, marking a significant move reminiscent of when quarterback Neil O’Donnell departed for the New York Jets back in 1996.
Gainwell shared his thoughts with the Tampa Bay media, expressing enthusiasm for his new team. "It was a great option for me," Gainwell explained.
"I wanted to be here last year, but you know, I am just happy to be here now. It was a great opportunity for me back in the South where I am from and just come here."
His transition to Tampa Bay has already sparked excitement, as seen in a social media post from the Buccaneers celebrating his arrival.
Gainwell's performance last season was nothing short of impressive, racking up 1,656 all-purpose yards-earning him sixth place in the AFC. Despite Spotrac's projection of a two-year, $5.9 million market value, the Buccaneers saw his potential and offered a deal that exceeded expectations.
During his time with the Steelers, Gainwell proved to be a versatile asset. Over 17 games, he rushed for 537 yards on 114 carries, averaging 4.7 yards per carry, and scored five touchdowns.
His rushing yards were second only to Jaylen Warren's 892 yards. Gainwell also showcased his receiving skills with 73 catches for 486 yards and three touchdowns, tying for second on the team in receiving yards.
Gainwell led the Steelers with 73 receptions and accumulated 1,023 all-purpose yards, highlighting his dual-threat capability.
Reflecting on his breakout season, Gainwell remarked, "I think it opened up a couple of people’s eyes just to see what I really can do. Me going out there to do all I can on the field basically just proved what I can do and what I have been doing all of my career.
Even if it has been hidden, it’s now coming to the light. I am very appreciative for the opportunity that Pittsburgh had given me to shine my light and now come here and do great things."
Steelers fans will have a chance to see Gainwell in action against his former team when the Buccaneers host the Steelers this season. It’s a matchup that promises to be filled with emotion and intensity, as Gainwell looks to make his mark in Tampa Bay.
