Kaleb Johnson Suddenly Looks Like A Steelers Roster Bubble Casualty

Kaleb Johnson's future with the Steelers looks bleak after a lackluster preseason performance raises doubts about his place on the team.

Kaleb Johnson’s path to a Steelers roster spot got a lot steeper after Pittsburgh’s preseason opener.

The Steelers beat the Green Bay Packers 28-9, but Johnson didn’t do much to help his case. He was on the field for just five offensive snaps and three special teams snaps, and he finished with two carries for three rushing yards. In a game where several players made noise, Johnson’s night stood out for the wrong reasons.

What makes the situation more telling is who didn’t play. Jaylen Warren and Rico Dowdle were both out, yet Johnson still didn’t get much of a bump in opportunity.

Travis Homer and Lew Nichols worked ahead of him in the first half, a clear sign of where the coaching staff has him slotted right now. Johnson didn’t even enter until the third quarter.

That lines up with how training camp has gone. The Athletic’s Mike DeFabo reported that Johnson has been competing for the RB3 job this summer, but he hasn’t done more than what the offensive line has created for him. His value as a pass catcher out of the backfield also hasn’t helped him separate.

It’s a rough turn for a player Pittsburgh drafted in the third round of the 2025 NFL draft. Last season under Mike Tomlin and his staff, Johnson played in 10 games but was on the field for only nine percent of the offensive snaps. He totaled 28 carries for 69 rushing yards in those appearances.

Now, with a new staff in place, he still hasn’t made enough progress to move up the depth chart. Camp and preseason are the moments for bubble players to force the issue, especially when a new coaching staff is sorting out roles. Johnson hasn’t delivered that kind of push.

Pittsburgh GM Omar Khan helped bring Johnson to town, but that hasn’t changed the reality of the competition around him. Dowdle, Warren, Homer, and Nichols all appear to be ahead of him in the backfield pecking order. Rookie running back Eli Heidenreich also looks to have earned some favor with the staff after logging 25 offensive snaps, finishing with nine carries and 21 rushing yards against Green Bay.

At this point, Johnson still has time to prove he belongs, but after this preseason showing, making the 53-man roster looks like a real uphill climb.

Steelers QB Drew Allar Just Made Pittsburghs Plan A Lot More Interesting

Drew Allars first preseason showing gave the Steelers a fresh reason to pause and reassess how quickly their quarterback room might evolve. The third-round pick in the 2026 NFL Draft completed 10 of 13 passes with two touchdowns and added a rushing score, a debut that fit neatly with the kind of upside Pittsburgh believed it was getting even after waiting until the middle rounds to take him.

Mike McCarthy said on The Pat McAfee Show that the organization had seen Allar as a first-round talent, and the early returns only make the pick look more intriguing. There is still plenty of development ahead for the rookie, with the coaching staff continuing to work on his footwork and throwing mechanics, but performances like this tend to tighten the timeline and raise the stakes for everyone involved. DK Metcalfs Viral Clapback Has Steelers Fans Talking Again

DK Metcalf has already given Steelers fans plenty to chew on since arriving from Seattle, and his latest moment came off the field. After a critical comment popped up on Instagram, the Pittsburgh wide receiver answered with a humorous clapback that quickly took off across social media, giving both Steelers followers and Seahawks fans something to react to.

Metcalfs online exchange was the kind of light, viral flash that follows a player everywhere once he becomes a bigger name in a new market. He was traded to Pittsburgh after the 2024 season and later signed a contract extension, so every public move now gets extra attention, especially when it lands with the same mix of swagger and comedy that has long followed him around. Steelers Camp Suddenly Puts Two Key Rodgers Targets In Doubt

Training camp has a way of sorting out depth charts quickly, and the Steelers are getting an early reminder of that with two of their most prominent wideouts sidelined. Michael Pittman Jr. has been out with a right leg injury, while DK Metcalf also missed practice, leaving Pittsburgh with a thinner receiver rotation than expected and forcing Roman Wilson into a more prominent role for the moment.

What makes the situation especially tricky is that the absences are not lining up on the same timetable. Pittmans status clouds the coming week for a receiver group that was already under the microscope, and Metcalfs situation is harder to read because the injury has not been disclosed. For a team trying to build timing and chemistry in camp, the uncertainty around two key targets is the kind of development that can reshape a room before the season even gets moving. [Read more 🡒]
