Joey Porter Split Just Turned Into Something Steelers Fans Hate

Joey Porter Sr.'s recent comments have ignited a firestorm of controversy, marking a dramatic end to his longstanding ties with the Pittsburgh Steelers after his son's unexpected trade.

Joey Porter Sr. turned up the heat on a long Steelers connection with one social media post.

On Sunday, the former Pittsburgh linebacker took to Instagram and fired off a video that mocked the franchise after his son, Joey Porter Jr., made his first appearance in a Dallas Cowboys uniform. Porter Jr. had been traded to Dallas just days earlier, and in his debut he played 24 snaps, was targeted once and did not allow a catch.

What really set off Steelers fans, though, was Porter Sr.’s message after the game.

“I almost forgot what it was like to walk through a hostile environment on game day,” Porter said in a video he posted to Instagram. “They tried to take me away from football for four weeks....

They held us down for three weeks; they couldn't hold us down for longer, man. Football is back.”

The “they” in Porter’s comments was an obvious shot at Pittsburgh. His son had been refusing to suit up while under contract, then landed in Dallas without an extension and decided to play anyway. The injury explanation around the situation has also been cast in a harsh light by the source account, which called the back issue fake.

It was a sharp break from a relationship that stretched across nearly three decades.

The Steelers drafted Porter Sr. in the third round of the 1999 NFL Draft, moved him into a full-time starting role by his second season and watched him become a three-time Pro Bowler in Pittsburgh. After eight strong seasons and heading into his age-30 year, the organization - with former general manager Kevin Colbert - chose a different direction in 2007.

Porter later finished his playing career with Miami and Arizona, then returned to Pittsburgh as an assistant coach from 2014 to 2018. He worked mainly as the outside linebackers coach, and his exit from the staff came when his contract was not renewed after the 2018 season.

Five years after that, Pittsburgh used the 32nd overall pick in the 2023 NFL Draft on Porter’s son. Joey Porter Jr. was a worthy selection, but family ties were clearly part of the equation too.

That relationship, however, has now been strained by the contract standoff that ended with Porter Jr. in Dallas. ESPN’s Ian Rapoport reported that Pittsburgh offered a deal that reached $28 million per season. Rapoport wrote that it “could have been acceptable” with some work and described the offer as a starting point for a deal to be completed.

He also reported that the Steelers included significant injury guarantees, but not full guarantees in the second year, which may have been the sticking point.

For a franchise that has long stayed loyal to its former stars, Porter Sr.’s public swipe landed hard. The family’s history with Pittsburgh runs 27 years deep, and roughly half of that time included Porter either playing for or coaching the organization. Now, after the latest jab, that bridge looks badly burned.

Steelers Suddenly Have A Dream WR Option For Aaron Rodgers

The Steelers have spent the opening stretch of the season looking for more juice at wide receiver, and the search has not gotten any easier despite the offseason additions meant to help Aaron Rodgers. Pittsburgh still wants more proven talent in that room, but the options remain tricky with the current depth chart and the usual trade and free-agency hurdles that come with chasing help in October.

Tyreek Hill suddenly looms as the kind of name that can change the conversation, even with the major knee injury he is working back from. NFL insider Adam Schefter, citing Hills agent Drew Rosenhaus, reported that the star receiver is in negotiations with multiple teams, including the Kansas City Chiefs, which leaves Pittsburgh monitoring a possible dream fit while also knowing it may not be the favorite landing spot. Steelers CB Injury Crunch Could Push Familiar Veteran Onto Radar

With injuries thinning out the cornerback room, the Steelers are doing what teams in late-season roster churn often do and keeping a close eye on familiar names who might help without much risk. One of those options is Trevon Diggs, who is currently on the Seahawks practice squad and has the kind of background that can make a quick fit more realistic if Pittsburgh decides it needs another body on the back end.

Diggs also comes with a built-in connection to head coach Mike McCarthy, which matters when a team is weighing a short-term addition at a position where communication and comfort can matter as much as raw talent. Nothing official has been reported, but the Steelers search for cornerback help suggests they are leaving the door open if the right veteran becomes available. [Read more 🡒]

Steelers Fans Have A New Reason To Revisit The Kaleb Johnson Trade

Kaleb Johnson gave Steelers fans another reason to look back at the trade when he turned in a mixed performance for Green Bay, flashing the kind of burst that made him intriguing in the first place. His 31-yard run helped set up a touchdown and served as a reminder that the big-play element still exists in his game, even if it did not always show up consistently during his time in Pittsburgh.

The same outing also underlined why the evaluation is not simple. Johnson put the ball on the ground near the goal line, leaving the very issue that followed him with the Steelers still hanging over his development, even as his explosive runs have looked better in Green Bay. For Pittsburgh, it is the kind of snapshot that keeps the trade in focus: enough upside to wonder what might have been, but enough risk to explain why the story is still unfinished. [Read more 🡒]
