Joey Porter Jr. Still Has One Steelers Matchup On His Mind

With tensions running high, Joey Porter Jr. reveals his true feelings towards the Steelers as he gears up for a potential future showdown.

Joey Porter Jr. isn’t hiding how badly he wants another shot at the Steelers.

Fresh off his trade to the Dallas Cowboys, Porter Jr. told Michael Irvin on “The White House” podcast that he’s already circling the next time he gets to line up against Pittsburgh.

"I'm waiting for that... I'm overly looking forward to that, OG.

I can't wait for that matchup," Porter Jr. said. "Whenever it happens, I'm looking forward to it.

I'm licking my chops."

That feeling lines up with how the situation played out in Pittsburgh. Porter Jr. was away from the team for the first three weeks of the season, and even though the absence was tied to a back injury on the surface, it was widely understood that the real issue was contract-related. His camp and the Steelers never got an extension done before Week 1, and with the final year of his rookie deal underway, Porter Jr. chose to sit out without a new agreement.

When he spoke publicly for the first time as a Cowboy last week, Porter Jr. said the whole process left him feeling burned.

"It was a hard process, a lot of ups and down," Porter Jr. said, per the Forth Worth Star-Telegram's Nick Harris. "Definitely felt disrespected and undervalued.

But that’s old news now. That’s how I look at it.

I’m onto new beginnings and new chapters, that’s how I’m looking at it.”

The split looked pretty complete by then. Porter Jr. got on the field for Dallas in Week 4, playing 25 defensive snaps without any extension in hand and with no guarantee one was coming. That alone said plenty about where his head was with Pittsburgh.

His father made it even clearer there wasn’t much warmth left. Joey Porter Sr. said, "They tried to take me away from football for four weeks,” and, "They held us down for three weeks... Football is back," while celebrating the Cowboys' win over the Houston Texans.

As for when Porter Jr. might actually get his wish, the schedule doesn’t make it easy. Pittsburgh won’t see the NFC East again until the 2028 season. The Steelers do have the Philadelphia Eagles in Week 11, though, because both teams finished in first place last year while the AFC North and NFC East last matched up two seasons ago.

Still, there’s a path for Porter Jr. to face Pittsburgh sooner than that. If he doesn’t land a new deal with Dallas in the offseason and doesn’t stay there through the franchise tag, he could end up on another team for 2027 - and if that happens, the Steelers could be back on the schedule next year depending on where he lands.

Steelers Veterans Already Facing Real Roster Pressure After Rough Start

A rough first quarter of the 2026 season has already put several Steelers veterans in an uncomfortable spot, as the early roster picture in Pittsburgh is starting to tighten. Performance issues, injuries and a deeper-than-expected level of competition have combined to make the margin for error smaller than it usually is this early, and a handful of familiar names are now fighting simply to stay in the conversation as the team evaluates its depth chart.

Asante Samuel Jr., Spencer Anderson, Rayshawn Jenkins, Rico Dowdle, Patrick Queen and Michael Pittman Jr. are all in the mix as players whose standing could shift if the early struggles continue. For the Steelers, the bigger question is not just who has underperformed, but how long the staff is willing to wait before making changes that could affect both the roster and the pecking order behind it. Steelers Suddenly Have A Real Chance To Build Momentum

A 2-2 start has the Steelers at a familiar crossroads entering Week 5, but the next stretch on the schedule gives them a real opening to change the tone of their season. Several opponents coming up carry their own injury concerns and roster issues, which could make this a favorable run for Pittsburgh if it can stay steady and take care of business.

Indianapolis, Tampa Bay, Philadelphia, Baltimore and Carolina all come with some degree of uncertainty on the other side, and that matters for a Steelers team looking for traction. With the early part of the season still leaving plenty unsettled, this feels like the sort of window good teams use to stack wins and bad teams waste, and Pittsburgh has a chance to show which path it is on. Steelers Suddenly Face A Jonathan Taylor Problem They Cant Ignore

Derrick Harmon landing on injured reserve with a toe injury leaves the Steelers making another adjustment up front, and rookie Gabriel Rubio is set to step into his role on the defensive line. It is the kind of reshuffle Pittsburgh can manage in the short term, but it also arrives at a time when the defense has already had trouble holding up against the run.

Jonathan Taylor and the Colts are the next test, and that is where the concern really sharpens for Pittsburgh. With the run defense still searching for consistency, the Steelers are staring at a matchup that could force them to prove the front can absorb the loss of Harmon without letting one of the leagues most dangerous backs control the game.
