Joe Burrow put together a strong afternoon against the Pittsburgh Steelers, then watched it slip away when the Bengals needed one more clean possession.
With Cincinnati trailing 30-27 and just over two minutes left, Burrow had a shot to at least get the Bengals into position for a tying field goal or a go-ahead touchdown. The drive moved quickly into Steelers territory, all the way to the Pittsburgh 38-yard line, which sat at the edge of Evan McPherson’s range. But McPherson never got the chance.
Burrow tried to escape pressure and get rid of the ball, then lost it in the process. Pittsburgh pounced on the fumble, and that was the end of it.
“Trying to take a shot at the end zone, trying not to take the sack, trying to get the ball out, (and I) fumbled it,” Burrow said after the game, via ESPN.
The ending stung because Burrow had been excellent for most of the day. He finished 28-for-37 for 282 yards and three passing touchdowns, and he opened the game by completing 14 straight passes. Still, the final sequence only added fuel to a conversation that’s been building around him.
Burrow has the profile of an elite quarterback, but the comeback numbers are starting to tell a different story. As longtime sportswriter Scott Kacsmar posted on social media, Burrow’s record in late-game situations is rough.
“Joe Burrow is now 1-34 when trailing in the last 8:00 in the NFL,” Kacsmar wrote in a post on X.
Kacsmar also pushed back on the idea that Burrow has a dramatic late-game reputation, adding, “And Ian Eagle even started that last drive saying Burrow’s had ‘a flair for the dramatic’ in his career,” Kacsmar wrote in a follow-up post. “No he hasn’t.”
To be fair, this one loss wasn’t all on Burrow. Cincinnati also had special teams mistakes that directly turned into 10 Steelers points. But the late fumble, paired with the broader trend, is why the criticism is getting louder.
And on social media, plenty of people went straight at the numbers.
“Mahomes has a better record when trailing in the last :13 seconds in the NFL,” wrote Mick Shaffer of KSHB 41 News.
“This is your king?” wrote Derrick Bell of Steelers Now.
“Really… crazy stat for a guy regarded as elite,” wrote Brent Martineau of CBS47/FOX30.
“Lamar Jackson has done this twice against Joe Burrow alone,” wrote Banks of Barstool Sports.
“What is the opposite of clutch?” wrote Jon Helmkamp of A to Z Sports.
“Lamar Jackson had as many wins today when trailing with under 8 minutes than Joe Burrow has in his life,” wrote the Russell St. Report.
