Javon Hargrave Joins NFC Contender in Exciting Two-Year Deal

Veteran defensive tackle Javon Hargrave navigates a significant career move, joining the Green Bay Packers and remaining a focal point in the NFC North rivalry.

Javon Hargrave's journey through the NFL took another turn on Wednesday as the seasoned defensive tackle inked a two-year deal with the Green Bay Packers, reportedly worth $23 million, including $13 million for the upcoming season. This move keeps Hargrave within the NFC North, setting up twice-yearly showdowns against his former team, the Minnesota Vikings.

Hargrave's release from the Vikings was largely a financial decision. Carrying a hefty $21.4 million cap hit, with $10.5 million in dead cap, his departure frees up nearly $11 million in cap space for Minnesota. The Vikings, facing salary cap challenges, were forced into making significant roster adjustments ahead of the new league year.

The 33-year-old veteran had joined the Vikings in 2025 on a two-year, $30 million contract, but his inaugural season didn’t meet expectations. Standing at 6-foot-2 and weighing 307 pounds, Hargrave managed 52 tackles, 3.5 sacks, one forced fumble, and one fumble recovery over 16 games.

Hargrave began his NFL career with the Pittsburgh Steelers, who drafted him in 2016. Over four seasons, he compiled 168 tackles, 14.5 sacks, two forced fumbles, one fumble recovery, and two passes defensed. His performance made him a valuable asset, but financial constraints led to his move to the Philadelphia Eagles after the 2019 season.

His stint with the Eagles in 2022 marked a career peak, as Hargrave notched a personal best of 11 sacks, alongside 60 tackles, one forced fumble, two fumble recoveries, and two passes defensed. This standout season paved the way for a lucrative four-year, $84 million contract with the San Francisco 49ers.

However, Hargrave's time in San Francisco was marred by a partially torn right tricep just three games into the 2024 season, leading to his release in the offseason. Since then, he hasn’t quite recaptured his previous form.

Now with the Packers, Hargrave has the opportunity to rejuvenate his career, teaming up with All-Pro edge rusher Micah Parsons on Green Bay’s defensive front. A native of Salisbury, North Carolina, Hargrave’s career stats are impressive, boasting 432 tackles, 49 sacks, five forced fumbles, five fumble recoveries, and eight passes defensed. Packers fans will be eager to see if Hargrave can bring his veteran experience and past prowess to bolster their defensive line.
