Mike Tomlin’s run in Pittsburgh has been nothing short of remarkable. Since taking over the Steelers in 2007, he’s become the NFL’s longest-tenured active head coach - and with good reason.
In 19 seasons, his teams have never finished below .500. That kind of consistency is rare air in today’s NFL.
But as the 2025 season winds down, questions are starting to swirl: Could Tomlin’s time in the Steel City be nearing its end?
If that happens - and we’re still firmly in the “if” column here - don’t expect Tomlin to be out of work for long. On Monday Night Countdown, ESPN’s Marcus Spears threw out a scenario that’s sure to get fans in the Big Apple buzzing: Tomlin to the Giants.
“If the Pittsburgh Steelers are moving away from Mike Tomlin,” Spears said, “Joe Schoen should hire Mike Tomlin to be the head coach for the New York Giants.”
That’s not just a hot take - it’s an intriguing fit. Spears pointed to Tomlin’s ability to bring structure and leadership to a franchise that’s been searching for both. And with Jaxson Dart now in place as the Giants’ quarterback of the future, Spears believes Tomlin could be the steady hand this young roster needs.

“He understands organization and structure,” Spears said. “If you want somebody to come in with unquestioned leadership, someone who’s done it at a high level and can immediately galvanize the guys on this football team, I think Mike Tomlin would be perfect for the New York Giants.”
It’s hard to argue with the logic. Tomlin isn’t just a motivator - he’s a proven winner.
He’s guided Pittsburgh to a Super Bowl title, multiple AFC Championship appearances, and, perhaps most impressively, has never let his team dip below .500 in nearly two decades. That’s not just coaching - that’s culture.
But even with that track record, there’s been mounting pressure in Pittsburgh. The Steelers haven’t won a playoff game since 2016, and in a franchise where expectations are always sky-high, that drought looms large. If ownership decides it’s time for a new direction - and again, that remains a big if - Tomlin would instantly become the most sought-after coaching candidate in the league.
Meanwhile, the Giants are in the market for a new head coach after parting ways with Brian Daboll earlier this season. After a promising 9-7-1 debut in 2022, Daboll’s Giants never found their footing again, winning just 11 of their next 44 games. The team’s 2-8 start this year sealed his fate, and now New York finds itself at a crossroads - again.
Enter Tomlin?
It’s easy to see why Spears thinks the fit makes sense. The Giants have a young quarterback in Dart, a front office looking to build long-term stability, and a fan base hungry for a return to relevance. Tomlin, with his no-nonsense leadership and proven ability to get the most out of his players, could be the culture-changer they’ve been missing.
Of course, all of this hinges on Pittsburgh making a move - something they’ve never done lightly. But if the Steelers do decide to turn the page, don’t be surprised if Mike Tomlin’s next chapter starts in New York.
