Germie Bernard Is Changing How Steelers Fans See This Draft Pick

A second-round gamble on Germie Bernard is paying off for the Steelers, as the rookie wide receiver is quickly proving himself to be a pivotal asset on the field.

The Steelers didn’t just add a receiver in Germie Bernard. After one preseason showing, they may have found the kind of young pass-catcher who changes the conversation around the entire draft.

Pittsburgh spent the spring eyeing a deep 2026 wide receiver class, and there was plenty of noise that the team might use its first pick on one of those top names. The Steelers got close to landing Makai Lemon with the 21st pick, but instead took Bernard in the second round.

At the time, that move could have looked like a fallback. It doesn’t anymore.

Bernard’s preseason debut made the case quickly. He was thrown at five times and came away with four catches for 51 yards.

More important than the raw numbers was how he got them. He turned a screen from the slot into a positive gain, then later took a simple out route to the boundary and made two defenders miss on the way to a 25-yard play.

He also showed he’s willing to work the middle of the field and absorb contact to finish a catch. Add in the way he lined up all over the formation, and the Steelers look like they already have a receiver who can step in and handle NFL responsibilities.

That matters for a team that already has two dependable starters, DK Metcalf and Michael Pittman Jr., but still needs reliable depth behind them. Bernard’s first preseason game suggested that help may already be here.

The early comparison around the league only makes Pittsburgh’s choice look stronger. Lemon, the player many expected the Steelers to draft, ended up with the Philadelphia Eagles. He’s been slowed by an early camp injury, though he recently joined teammates on the JUGS machine, a sign he’s nearing a return.

The New Orleans Saints are dealing with an even tougher situation. They used their first-round pick on Jordyn Tyson out of Arizona State University, but a hamstring injury will keep him out for the next few months, meaning his NFL debut will have to wait until the regular season.

Around the league, plenty of teams are still hunting for that rookie who can make an immediate impact. Pittsburgh may already have its answer.

Three Steelers Enter Week 2 With Their Roster Hopes Suddenly Slipping

The Steelers came out of their preseason opener against Green Bay looking like a team with some real momentum, but not every player in camp followed that script. Week 1 gave Pittsburgh a chance to sort through the bottom of the roster, and for a few players, the first exhibition game only sharpened the pressure heading into this weeks meeting with the Jets.

Kaleb Johnson, Riley Nowakowski and Esezi Otomewo all need a cleaner showing to keep their roster hopes alive. Each has work to do before Week 2, and with competition tightening in camp, the next opportunity matters more than ever for players trying to stick on the final group. [Read more 🡒]

Steelers Turn Jets Game Into A Real Quarterback Audition

With Aaron Rodgers already signaling that he doesnt see much value in preseason snaps, Mike McCarthy is using the Steelers game against the Jets as something different: a closer look at the young quarterbacks. The coach said Rodgers will sit out the matchup, while Mason Rudolph, despite drawing praise for his recent play, will also remain on the bench as Pittsburgh shifts the spotlight toward the next wave of passers.

That leaves Will Howard and Drew Allar to get the first shot in a game that is more about evaluation than the scoreboard. For a team still sorting through its quarterback depth, the chance to watch both rookies operate in live action should tell the staff more than another series from the veteran group would. Steelers Quarterback Battle May Be Telling Us More About Will Howard

The Steelers quarterback picture has started to look less like a simple competition and more like a long evaluation of who might fit as the franchise answer down the road. Drew Allars preseason work has turned heads, but the deeper intrigue may be centered on Will Howard, the second-year passer whose development has earned positive notice from Mike McCarthy and added another layer to how Pittsburgh is thinking about its depth chart.

With no roster decisions announced yet, the debate is not just about who backs up whom, but how many quarterbacks the Steelers might be willing to carry while they sort out the future. Howards progress has become part of that conversation, and the fact that Pittsburgh could consider keeping multiple passers around only raises the stakes as the team tries to balance immediate stability with a longer-term search for its next starter.
