The Steelers didn’t just add a receiver in Germie Bernard. After one preseason showing, they may have found the kind of young pass-catcher who changes the conversation around the entire draft.
Pittsburgh spent the spring eyeing a deep 2026 wide receiver class, and there was plenty of noise that the team might use its first pick on one of those top names. The Steelers got close to landing Makai Lemon with the 21st pick, but instead took Bernard in the second round.
At the time, that move could have looked like a fallback. It doesn’t anymore.
Bernard’s preseason debut made the case quickly. He was thrown at five times and came away with four catches for 51 yards.
More important than the raw numbers was how he got them. He turned a screen from the slot into a positive gain, then later took a simple out route to the boundary and made two defenders miss on the way to a 25-yard play.
He also showed he’s willing to work the middle of the field and absorb contact to finish a catch. Add in the way he lined up all over the formation, and the Steelers look like they already have a receiver who can step in and handle NFL responsibilities.
That matters for a team that already has two dependable starters, DK Metcalf and Michael Pittman Jr., but still needs reliable depth behind them. Bernard’s first preseason game suggested that help may already be here.
The early comparison around the league only makes Pittsburgh’s choice look stronger. Lemon, the player many expected the Steelers to draft, ended up with the Philadelphia Eagles. He’s been slowed by an early camp injury, though he recently joined teammates on the JUGS machine, a sign he’s nearing a return.
The New Orleans Saints are dealing with an even tougher situation. They used their first-round pick on Jordyn Tyson out of Arizona State University, but a hamstring injury will keep him out for the next few months, meaning his NFL debut will have to wait until the regular season.
Around the league, plenty of teams are still hunting for that rookie who can make an immediate impact. Pittsburgh may already have its answer.
