Diontae Johnson is using his time away from the NFL to send a message to the next wave of players.
In a video posted by AAT Management on Instagram, the former Pittsburgh Steelers wide receiver spoke directly to a group of young athletes about mindset, daily habits, and the value of staying grounded in who you are. Johnson stressed the need to keep improving in small ways and to keep working even when the motivation isn’t there.
“One thing, man. Be yourself, bro.
Don’t be scared to be yourself. Stay true to yourself through and through.
And your mindset. I’ve been out of the league for a year because my mindset sucked,” Johnson said.
“And that’s going to take you a long way: how you carry yourself, your attitude, body language, how you speak to people-all that. Just make sure you’re paying attention to the little things like that.
And when you come out on this field, don’t be scared to help one another. Like everybody’s gonna mess up.
Everybody'(s) not gonna be perfect. But it’s about what you’re doing to get better on the next rep. 1%, that’s what I tell myself. 1% every day, even if I don’t feel like getting up or doing something.
Trying to do something 1% better. Catching, tennis ball drills, foot-placement drills.
Whatever it is to make myself better. Like just doing the little details.
Once you find that routine that is unique to you, bro. Sky’s the limit for each and every one of y’all.
Keep working.”
Johnson’s Steelers run was a productive one. Pittsburgh took him with the third-round pick it received in the Antonio Brown deal with the Oakland Raiders, and he became a major part of the offense over five seasons. He made the Pro Bowl in 2021 and finished his time in Pittsburgh with 4,363 receiving yards and 25 touchdowns.
His exit from the Steelers led to a busy stretch of roster moves. Johnson was traded to the Carolina Panthers before the 2024 season along with a 2024 seventh-round pick in exchange for Donte Jackson and a 2024 sixth-rounder that was used on Logan Lee. Later that year, he was dealt to the Baltimore Ravens before the trade deadline, but his stint there unraveled after he was suspended for refusing to enter the team’s Week 13 game against the Philadelphia Eagles and then released.
The Houston Texans claimed him off waivers, but they also moved on after beating the Los Angeles Chargers in the Wild Card round. Johnson has not played in an NFL game since, and he was most recently with the Cleveland Browns last offseason.
He just turned 30, so the physical tools are still there for him to make a play or two if he gets another shot. But the drops that followed him in Pittsburgh, along with the issues that surfaced in Baltimore and Houston and the reported locker room argument with Minkah Fitzpatrick in November 2023, leave plenty of questions about whether the Steelers would ever revisit the idea of a reunion, even with a new coaching staff.
For now, Johnson appears to be doing some soul-searching while keeping the door open to another NFL opportunity. If that chance comes, it likely won’t be in Pittsburgh.
