Former Steelers Standout Suffers Injury That Changes Everything

Javon Hargrave's serious Achilles injury not only sidelines him for the season but could potentially spell the end of an illustrious career, leaving Steeler Nation uneasy about the future.

While the Steelers were celebrating a win over the Colts on Sunday, one of their former defensive standouts took a brutal turn. Javon Hargrave suffered a torn Achilles tendon, and NFL insider Ian Rapoport confirmed the injury Monday morning.

The timing and the severity have people wondering if that was the last meaningful snap of Hargrave’s career. The injury is season-ending, and at this stage of his career, the outlook is as grim as it gets.

Hargrave built a reputation the hard way. A third-round pick out of South Carolina State, he came in with the kind of small-school profile that usually means a long climb.

Instead, he forced his way onto the field quickly, starting 13 games as a rookie in 2016. His compact build and powerful lower body made him a reliable run defender right away, but what really separated him was how he could get after the quarterback.

That part of his game was rare for a nose tackle. Hargrave’s quick first step and his pass-rushing toolkit made life miserable for centers and guards, even in an era when players at that spot were usually expected to just occupy space.

During his time in Pittsburgh, he put up 14.5 sacks, an eye-opening number for his position. Alongside Cameron Heyward and Stephon Tuitt, he helped give the Steelers one of the league’s top defensive lines.

Pittsburgh eventually lost him in 2020, largely because of the cap and the cost of keeping that front together. Hargrave kept producing after he left, and his career sack total now sits at 49. The Steelers, for their part, have spent years trying to find someone who could fully replace him.

Now the question is whether that total ever changes. Achilles injuries are devastating, and recovery usually stretches to about a year before a player can even get back on the field. Even then, the mobility often doesn’t fully return until two years later, if it does at all.

Hargrave’s game has always been built around that first step, and that’s exactly the kind of trait this injury can strip away. It is possible he could play again in 2027, but not at full strength. A truly healthy return might not come until 2028, when he’d be 35, and that’s a tough age for any defender to carry that burden.

There are examples of players making it back, including Vince Wilfork, who suffered an Achilles injury in 2013 at age 31 and still played a few more seasons at a high level. But that case is not a perfect comparison. Wilfork was younger, and his game was built more around eating space than exploding into gaps.

Steelers May Have Found A Timely Answer On The Defensive Line

Gabriel Rubios first regular-season appearance for the Steelers came in Week 5 against the Colts, and it arrived at a time when Pittsburgh needed some help inside. The rookie defensive tackle was pressed into action in a limited role, but he looked steady enough against the run to give the defense another useful body in the rotation.

Rubios work came in specific game situations, which makes the sample size small, but the impact was clear enough to notice. When he was on the field, Indianapolis had little room to operate on the ground, and Pittsburghs front continued to hold up well in a game where every snap in the trenches mattered. [Read more 🡒]

Former Steelers Favorite JuJu Smith-Schuster May Not Be Waiting Long

JuJu Smith-Schuster is still working his way back into the league picture, and the wide receiver-needy Minnesota Vikings are giving him a look as they sort through options for depth. Smith-Schuster, a former Steelers favorite, is among the players who worked out for the Vikings as the team tries to navigate injuries at the position and keep enough proven help around the lineup.

The timing is notable for Smith-Schuster, who was released by the Giants in August after signing there in June and spent the 2025 season with the Chiefs. Minnesota has already added Odell Beckham Jr., and coach Kevin O'Connell has been discussing the state of the receiver room, which suggests the team may not be done searching for answers just yet. Steelers Quarterback Search Just Took A Tough Turn With One Prospect

The Steelers long-running search for quarterback help in the next draft cycle just hit an unexpected snag, and it involves a name that had been worth monitoring. UCLA quarterback Nico Iamaleava had been on the radar as Pittsburgh kept an eye on the 2027 class, but his season ended against Oregon, according to CBS Sports reporter Matt Zenitz, changing the outlook for a player who had been building momentum.

For Pittsburgh, the injury matters because the team has shown interest in quarterbacks for the upcoming draft, and Iamaleava had been part of that broader conversation. Now there is real uncertainty around where he fits from here, with his draft status potentially in jeopardy and his path back to the field unclear as the college and pro timelines start to shift.
