Harrison has joined the New York Giants’ practice squad after going unclaimed by a roster spot elsewhere, while Roberts remains unsigned. For Steelers fans who spent part of the summer hoping Roberts might return to Pittsburgh, the move only adds to the head-scratching. Roberts had already built up plenty of goodwill in his first stint with the team, and that buzz only grew when he came back for a couple of weeks this summer.
The Steelers’ linebacker competition during training camp and the preseason made one thing pretty clear: Harrison was the odd man out. Pittsburgh was able to save a good chunk of cap space by moving on from him, and the fit never really clicked the way the team hoped it would.

The connection in New York helps explain why the Giants made the move. Harrison has familiarity with first-year Giants head coach John Harbaugh, who drafted him in Baltimore. The two stayed together in the Ravens organization for four seasons before Harrison left Baltimore as a free agent.
Pittsburgh brought Harrison in on an expensive two-year deal in 2025, hoping he could replace Roberts as a run-stopping linebacker who could also contribute on special teams. The Steelers also liked that he was the younger option. On paper, it looked like a smart piece of business.
But the production never matched the investment. Harrison didn’t do much to help the defense last season, and he kept losing snaps to Cole Holcomb. That trend continued this summer, and with his salary attached, he became an easy choice to move on from once the preseason roster cuts got serious.
So while Roberts is still waiting for a chance, Harrison has at least found a practice-squad home. It may not stay that way for long, but it’s a job - and right now, that’s more than Roberts has.
