Fred Johnson, the former Pittsburgh Steelers offensive tackle, is continuing his journey in Pennsylvania by re-signing with the Philadelphia Eagles for the 2026 season. This move, reported by NFL Network insider Tom Pelissero, marks another chapter in Johnson's evolving NFL career.
Standing at an imposing 6-foot-7 and weighing 326 pounds, Johnson's journey began as an undrafted free agent out of Florida in 2019. He initially joined the Steelers, making their 53-man roster, but didn't see game action before being waived five months later.
The Cincinnati Bengals quickly picked him up off waivers, where he spent the next few seasons as a backup lineman from 2019 to 2021. However, Johnson's time with the Bengals ended in 2022, leading him to a brief stint with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, who waived him that November.
Johnson's path took a positive turn when he joined the Eagles' practice squad. After the 2022 season, he secured a reserve/future contract with Philadelphia. His hard work paid off as he won the backup tackle position in training camp, earning a new two-year contract.
A memorable moment came in Week 3 of the 2024 season. Johnson stepped up during the Eagles' narrow 15-12 victory over the New Orleans Saints when starting tackle Lane Johnson was injured. He also saw action in the regular season finale against the New York Giants as the Eagles rested their starters.
Johnson's contributions were part of the Eagles' successful run to Super Bowl LIX, where they triumphed over the Kansas City Chiefs with a decisive 40-22 victory. Following this achievement, Johnson entered free agency after the 2024 season.
Now, as he re-signs with the Eagles, Johnson continues to be a valuable asset on their offensive line, bringing experience and depth to the team. His journey is a testament to resilience and adaptability in the ever-competitive NFL landscape.
