The Philadelphia Eagles find themselves in a now all-too-familiar offseason dilemma: searching for a new offensive coordinator-for the fourth year in a row.
Since 2023, the Eagles have cycled through Brian Johnson, Kellen Moore, and Kevin Patullo. Johnson and Patullo were dismissed, while Moore parlayed his stint into a head coaching opportunity with the New Orleans Saints. That kind of turnover is rare for a franchise with such recent success, and it’s starting to raise eyebrows around the league.
Big Names, Bigger Questions
This offseason, the Eagles went after some high-profile options. Two former head coaches-Mike McDaniel, fresh off his stint with the Dolphins, and Brian Daboll, recently let go by the Giants-were both on Philadelphia’s radar.
Both were logical fits: experienced play-callers with head coaching chops and offensive pedigrees. But neither ended up in Philly.
Instead, McDaniel took the offensive coordinator job with the Chargers, and Daboll joined the Titans in the same role. That’s not just surprising-it’s telling. When two respected offensive minds opt for lateral moves elsewhere, it forces you to ask some hard questions about what’s going on behind the scenes in Philadelphia.
And they weren’t alone. The Eagles reportedly showed interest in several other candidates, including Mike Kafka, Charlie Weis Jr., Declan Doyle, Bobby Slowik, and Zac Robinson.
Each of them either withdrew from consideration or accepted jobs with other teams. Not one of them landed a head coaching gig.
These were all lateral moves-and they still didn’t choose the Eagles.
Why the Cold Shoulder?
On paper, this job should be one of the most attractive in the league. Philadelphia just hoisted the Lombardi Trophy last season.
The offense is stacked with talent: Saquon Barkley in the backfield, Devonta Smith and A.J. Brown on the outside, and a strong offensive line anchoring it all.
That’s a dream scenario for most offensive minds.
But in 2025, that dream didn’t quite materialize. The unit underperformed, and the Eagles made a quick playoff exit.
That stumble, paired with the revolving door of coordinators, may be giving potential hires pause. There’s also growing chatter around head coach Nick Sirianni’s job security.
If candidates believe Sirianni’s seat is heating up, they might not want to tie their futures to a potentially short-term regime.
Where Do the Eagles Go From Here?
With several top targets off the board, the Eagles are now turning their attention to names like Matt Nagy, Josh Grizzard, Frank Smith, and Jerrod Johnson. All bring different strengths to the table, but none are the slam-dunk hires that would immediately quiet the outside noise.
The talent is there. The window to contend is still open.
But the Eagles need stability-and fast. Finding the right offensive coordinator isn’t just about X’s and O’s anymore.
It’s about restoring confidence in the direction of the franchise. Because right now, for a team that just won it all, the future feels a little less certain than it should.
