Eagles Eye Former Coach for Key Role After Patullo Exit

The Eagles search for offensive stability may lead them back to a familiar name with deep organizational ties and recent play-calling experience.

Another offseason, another offensive coordinator search in Philadelphia - the fourth in as many years. After a rollercoaster 2025 campaign that ended short of expectations, head coach Nick Sirianni decided to part ways with Kevin Patullo after just one season at the helm of the offense. Now, the Eagles are once again in the market for a new play-caller, hoping this time they find someone who can bring stability to a role that’s become a revolving door since Shane Steichen left in 2021.

On Saturday, the Eagles took a closer look at a name that should ring a few bells in Philly: Mike Kafka. According to reports, Kafka interviewed for the OC job over the weekend, and while he’s most recently been associated with the New York Giants, his ties to the Eagles run deep.

Kafka was originally drafted by Philadelphia in the fourth round back in 2010 and spent two seasons with the team as a quarterback. Fast forward more than a decade, and he’s carved out a solid coaching résumé - most recently serving as both offensive coordinator and interim head coach for the Giants in 2025.

With the Giants finalizing a deal to bring in John Harbaugh as their next head coach, Kafka appears to be the odd man out in New York. But that could work in the Eagles' favor. Not only have they faced his offenses twice a year since 2022, but they’ve also seen firsthand how Kafka can scheme and adapt, even with limited weapons.

Back in 2022, Kafka helped guide the Giants to a surprising postseason berth - a year in which Daniel Jones had arguably the best season of his career, throwing for over 3,200 yards and 15 touchdowns. It wasn’t flashy, but it was efficient, and it showcased Kafka’s ability to tailor an offense to his quarterback’s strengths.

Since then, the Giants’ offense has struggled to replicate that success, but context matters. The roster has been thin, and the quarterback carousel hasn’t helped.

Still, there were flashes in 2025 - especially from rookie quarterback Jaxson Dart, who showed real growth under Kafka’s guidance. That kind of developmental touch is something the Eagles could value, especially with Jalen Hurts entering a critical stretch of his career.

Kafka isn’t the only name in the mix. Zac Robinson, currently the Rams’ quarterbacks coach and pass game coordinator, has also interviewed. And the Eagles are casting a wide net, reportedly showing interest in several other high-profile names, including Jim Bob Cooter, Charlie Weis Jr., Mike McDaniel, and Brian Daboll.

This hire is more than just about X’s and O’s. It’s about finding someone who can build continuity with Hurts, maximize a talented offensive core, and bring back the rhythm that made this unit one of the NFL’s most dangerous not too long ago. The Eagles have cycled through coordinators every year since Steichen’s departure, and each transition has come with growing pains.

Now, with a critical offseason ahead and expectations still sky-high, the pressure is on to find the right voice to lead this offense - not just for 2026, but for the long haul. Whether that’s Kafka or someone else, the Eagles need more than just a fresh set of plays. They need a long-term partner who can bring consistency to a team that’s had anything but.
