San Diego State's standout cornerback, Chris Johnson, recently opened up about his admiration for the Pittsburgh Steelers, a team he grew up supporting. In an interview with ESPN's Kevin Clark, Johnson shared that his idol was none other than former Steelers cornerback Ike Taylor. For Johnson, Taylor represented the epitome of effort and dedication on the field.
“I grew up a Steelers fan,” Johnson admitted. “Ike Taylor was my guy.
He wasn’t the biggest or the fastest, but his effort was unmatched. He played for his teammates.”
Taylor, who spent 12 seasons with the Steelers from 2003 to 2014, is considered one of the franchise's top cornerbacks, right alongside legends like Mel Blount and Rod Woodson. Now, Taylor continues to contribute to the team as a scout.
Johnson, a 6-foot, 193-pound cornerback, has made a name for himself at San Diego State. Over the past two seasons, he has been a force on the field, recording 116 tackles, 13 pass breakups, five interceptions, and forcing four fumbles. His knack for big plays was evident last year with four interceptions, including two pick-sixes that led the Mountain West Conference.
While Johnson primarily played as an outside cornerback for the Aztecs, the Steelers currently have a solid lineup in that area with Joey Porter Jr., Jamel Dean, Asante Samuel Jr., and Brandin Echols. However, there could be an opportunity for Johnson to transition into a slot role, where the Steelers currently rely on the experienced Jalen Ramsey, who is 31.
Ranked as the No. 45 player on the NFL Mock Draft Database consensus big board, Johnson is certainly within the Steelers' sights, especially with their No. 53 overall pick in the second round.
