Dolphins Linked to Trade Talks That Could Shake Up Cowboys or Lions

Dolphins' talks to trade All-Pro safety Minkah Fitzpatrick could lead to deal-making opportunities with the Cowboys or Lions.

The Detroit Lions and Dallas Cowboys are on the hunt for safety reinforcements, and the Miami Dolphins might just have what they need. According to NFL insider Jordan Schultz, the Dolphins are in discussions to trade former All-Pro safety Minkah Fitzpatrick.

Fitzpatrick, a five-time Pro Bowler, was acquired last offseason in a deal that also involved Jonnu Smith and Jalen Ramsey heading to the Pittsburgh Steelers. However, the trade didn’t pan out as expected for either side.

Since 2023, Fitzpatrick's performance has dipped, with only one interception and six passes defensed last season. His coverage skills have waned, allowing a 63.6% completion rate and a passer rating of 89.0 when targeted.

Despite these challenges, Fitzpatrick could still attract interest from teams like the Cowboys and Lions, who are both in need of a cost-effective safety option. The Lions boast a strong safety duo in Kerby Joseph and Brian Branch, but injuries have taken their toll.

Branch's torn ACL in December puts his 2026 season in jeopardy, and Joseph's ongoing knee issues could be a persistent problem. This leaves the Lions looking for additional support.

Meanwhile, the Cowboys are facing their own safety concerns. With a potential gap in their lineup and the possibility of cutting veteran Malik Hooker, bringing in someone with Fitzpatrick's experience might be a strategic move.

Fitzpatrick's declining performance and hefty contract present a challenge for the Dolphins in trade talks. They might need to absorb a significant portion of his salary to make him an appealing option for other teams. Even so, with the league aware of the Dolphins' recent roster changes, moving Fitzpatrick might not be straightforward, as teams could wait for a potential release.
